  • Water for Elephants

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Sara Gruen
    • Narrated By David LeDoux, John Randolph Jones
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

    Kindle Customer says: "Great Narration!!"
    "A Must Read"

From my first listen, I knew I did not want this book to end. A wonderfully written, poignant tale of the life of a kind, gentle, man forced into situations one can only imagine. Today, I finished "Water for Elephants" and I feel bereft that I can not continue. I can't wait to discuss this book at my book club.

  • Hannah Coulter: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Wendell Berry
    • Narrated By Susan Denaker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"Ignorant boys killing each other," is just about all Nathan Coulter would tell his wife about the Battle of Okinawa in the spring of 1945. Life carried on for the community of Port William, Kentucky, as some boys returned from the war while the lives of others were mourned. In her seventies, Nathan's wife, Hannah, now has time to tell of the years since the war.

    Marie says: "Very sweet story!"
    "Wonderfully Written"

I gave this novel only 3 stars as I have really mixed emotions about the narration of this book. Although well executed the maudlin tone throughout made the book tiresome to listen to for long periods. I kept thinking I would enjoy this book more if I was reading it myself. That said, Wendell Berry's thought provoking story brings to question the changing American culture from rural to city life, and the horrors of war, in the mid-1900's. I would recommend this as a read, not a listen.

  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Signature Performance by Elijah Wood

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Mark Twain
    • Narrated By Elijah Wood
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A Signature Performance: Elijah Wood becomes the first narrator to bring a youthful voice and energy to the story, perhaps making it the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent.

james d. thomas says: "Worthy "signature" premiere"
    "Not for Me"

Never having read this classic novel, I thought it would be fun and interesting. However I, too (as a previous reviewer stated), couldn't handle the "N" word nor the phrase "by and by" used again and again. Huck's adventures got tedious after awhile and it is the first audio book I've given up on before finishing.

  • Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Gilbert
    • Narrated By Elizabeth Gilbert
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At the end of her best-selling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government....

    Nancy says: "Perfect timing"

I heard Elizabeth Gilbert interviewed on NPR and I was so sure that I would love this book, that I ordered it on the spot. I did not love it, I only sort of liked it. Much of it seemed like the musings of a neurotic women.

I did like the well researched, sociology aspects of it...learning about the evolution of marriage in the U.S. and the expectations of marital partnes in other countries. Buy it, but don't expect to love it!

  • All Is Vanity

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By Christina Schwarz
    • Narrated By Blair Brown

Widely celebrated for her debut novel, Drowning Ruth, Christina Schwarz once again proves herself to be a writer of remarkable depth and range. All Is Vanity probes into the mysteries of the human heart and uncovers the passions that drive ordinary people to break the rules in pursuit of their own desires.

    DH says: "Strange Bedfellows"

Drivel is the word I kept hearing in my head as I read All is Vanity. Of course, the title says it all, but I had to spend all those hours listening to 2 immature, neurotic women bemoan decent lives while living in their fantasy worlds. I wish I hadn't bothered. Stick to Drowning Ruth which was a fantastic read.
