How does a nice Italian boy from Queens turn his passion for food and wine into a nationwide empire? In his intrepid, irreverent, and terrifically entertaining memoir, Restaurant Man, Joe Bastianich charts his remarkable culinary journey from his parents’ neighborhood eatery to becoming one of the country’s most successful restaurateurs, along with his superstar chef partners: his mother, Lidia Bastianich, and Mario Batali.

What did you like best about Restaurant Man? What did you like least?

Although I have never dined in a B&B establishment (Batali and Bastianich), I enjoyed reading about Joe's creative vision for each of his restaurants and what makes them all so unique.

Some parts of the book were a bit over-the-top braggadocio and swagger and I could not help wondering how much of this he picked up from Mama and her own business model.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have added more personal stories and anedotes to the book like the Pope Benedict episode and adventures in Italy.

Did Joe Bastianich do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Joe Bastianich was the central character of this book. I never knew anything about his father until I listened to the book.

Did Restaurant Man inspire you to do anything?

Yes.....break out and enjoy different foods.

A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past.

Classic Pendergast returns with a serpentine plot and characters from past books. Rene Auberjonois' narration always a delight. Blue Labyrinth was one I could not stop listening to and left me wanting the next installment very soon. A great step up from the last two or three books which were rather disappointing. Well worth a credit!

The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

Rhonda Morrison says: "What a great book, Hildy is a great character!"

What a delightful summer read! I felt like I was right in the town of Wendover with Hildy, Frankie and the rest of the characters! Mary Beth Hurt's narration was spot on...the inflections and cadence...a hoot and such fun to listen to.....The "cautionary tale" woven throughout the novel expertly done. Bravo Ann Leary, let's have more like this....

The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

I have read quite a few Stephen King books but admittedly not crazy for the “very weird and gory” ones. As a big fan of police procedurals (as well as legal thrillers), I was anxious to see how Mr. King would handle this about-face with his latest novel. I was not disappointed.

I have been glued to this audiobook every day since starting it…the short chapters reminiscent of James Patterson and Det Ret Hodges as Everyman, guy down the street we all know who is chomping at the bit to get back in the game. The fast paced cat and mouse plot kept me from pressing the “pause” button.

King reinvents himself in this genre and I hope he continues. You will not be disappointed. Well worth a credit or a purchase.

Where does Love and Treasure rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

That's a hard question as there have been so many excellent "listens"....In this "WWI genre" I would rate it second only to "City of Women"....

Who was your favorite character and why?

The character of Jack. He was the kind hearted American G.I. but did not forget his Jewish heritage.

Which character – as performed by Jonathan Davis and Paul Hecht – was your favorite?

Believe it or not, the Freudian analyst in Part II....

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My reaction came in Part II which I thought was going to end in a different way and then a twist in plot going back in time which I loved....That time period of 1919 was shockingly restrictive towards women as compared to today.

    Any additional comments?

I await Ms. Waldman's next book!

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

After abandoning a not-so-entertaining audiobook, I started listening to this one and could not get enough. The characters are well developed, the writing descriptive and the plot one big fascinating saga I did not want to end! Reminscent of a Dickensian tale with a touch of Holden Caulfield (Catcher in the Rye)...Donna Tartt ties it all up nicely in her epilogue and doesn't leave you hanging...although I do wonder about Boris. David Pittu is a pro and gives a masterful presentation. I highly recommend it.

The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a down-on-his-luck English detective working his way through solving a cold case. The narrator was excellent and the characters and plot well-developed. The story keeps you guessing till the end and I found myself musing about the suspects. I hope Ms. Rowling who has now revealed herself as the author continues this into a series. Well written and thoroughly enjoyable....One of the best audiobooks I've listened to this year.

I have yet to be disappointed with a John Lescroart book. I have read/listened to all the books in the series and even though it's been a while, I fell right back in with Abe, Treya and the gang and the infamous "Lous". Lescroart is the master of courtroom thrillers and well developed characters. I was glued to it and did not want it to end. Make it your next Audible purchase.

I read "Sister of my Heart" and thought that was terrific, but this story of Indian culture was up there with "Shantaram". While the main character embarks on a journey to the US which some may say "yeah boring", it turns out to be pivotal point in the lives and loves of all the richly described characters. I was glued to this one. I look forward to more from Chitra!

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms.

I have been a fan of Maeve Binchy since "Light a Penny Candle" and have read all of her books. This one did not meet the mark. I found it more like a series of vignettes rather than a novel. Too many characters to keep me engaged for any length of time. I enjoyed the narrator and the book had some lighthearted moments but not like any of her other novels.

Freeman, the new novel by Leonard Pitts, Jr., takes place in the first few months following the Confederate surrender and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Upon learning of Lee's surrender, Sam - a runaway slave who once worked for the Union Army - decides to leave his safe haven in Philadelphia and set out on foot to return to the war-torn South. What compels him on this almost-suicidal course is the desire to find his wife, the mother of his only child, whom he and their son left behind 15 years earlier on the Mississippi farm to which they all "belonged".
