Flavia de Luce is a dangerously brilliant 11-year-old with a passion for chemistry and a genius for solving murders. This time, Flavia finds herself untangling two deaths—separated by time but linked by the unlikeliest of threads.

Excellent mystery, writing, and narration. Flavia has a very curious combination of mature and little girl thoughts. It works, though.

It had been a typical New Year's Eve party. But as midnight approaches, Mr. Satterthwaite - a keen observer of human nature - senses that the real drama of the evening is yet to unfold. And so it proves when a mysterious stranger knocks on the door. Who is this Mr. Quin? Mr. Satterthwaite's new friend is an enigma. He seems to appear and disappear almost like a trick of the light. In fact, the only consistent thing about him is that his presence is always an omen - sometimes good, but sometimes deadly....

My enjoyment of the stories varied. Some were fantastic. Others just sat there. Thus the 4. Mr. Quin is a bit magical. His powers include knowing when a young lover needs his special help, and showing up to direct Mr. Satterthwaite. They do not include knowing the key to the mystery (I don't think), so the detection in the story is not ruined.

My favorite was The Man from the Sea

In 1882, after six years of foreign travel and adventure, renowned diplomat and detective Erast Fandorin returns to Moscow in the heart of Mother Russia. His Moscow homecoming is anything but peaceful. In the hotel where he and his loyal if impertinent manservant Masa are staying, Fandorin's old war-hero friend General Michel Sobolev ("Achilles" to the crowd) has been found dead, felled in his armchair by an apparent heart attack.

With this anthology, best-selling author Brad Meltzer introduces 21 original stories from today’s most prominent mystery writers. In Laura Lippman’s "Waco 1982", a young reporter stuck with a seemingly mundane assignment on lost-and-found boxes unwittingly discovers a dark crime. In Joseph Finder’s "Heirloom", a scheming neighbor frightens the new couple on the block with an unnerving tale of buried treasure. In R. L. Stine’s "High Stakes", a man on his honeymoon gets drawn into a bizarre bet involving a coffin, a bet he may pay for with his life.

    Story

I agree with the other reviewers that many of the stories are contrived to fit the box theme. Many are not mysteries. However, I think the theme is interesting, and the collection worth the credit. All are well written and narrated.

The 1st story is my favorite. The Most Private Detective is my next most favorite. A number of others were very interesting as well.
The last one, about the world record, is explicit and raunchy, so beware.

"The Old Man" rivals Sherlock Holmes in his insightfulness but is much closer to Sherlock's brother, Mycroft, in his methods. Like Mycroft, the old man reasons through mystery cases but leaves the legwork to others.

These stories are part of the foundation of the mystery genre. These were one of the influences for Agatha Christie. The plots are clever and well developed.

The only thing I don't like is that the old man does not share his conclusions with anyone but Polly, who he relates his cases to. The criminals are not brought to justice.

Enjoy the great detectives of the Golden Age of classic mysteries in this unique collection of audio whodunits. Newly recorded for this original anthology, the crimes, criminals, and sleuths depicted here set the standard for decades to come, and remain as entertaining today as they were when first published. Fantastic narrators including Simon Prebble, Kate Fenton, Bill Wallace, and Robert Fass breathe new life into these stories.

As with all anthologies, the quality varies. There are several that are outstanding. The worst is pretty good. The narrations are all good. There were several that I skipped because I'd heard them in other collections, but most of these are not easily found. I recommend these to those who love mysteries.

Two officers from the American troops stationed in Caserta, Italy, not far from Naples, have been found murdered. The MOs are completely different, and it seems like the officers had no connection to each other, but one frightening fact links the murders: each body was discovered with a single playing card: the Lieutenant, the 10 of hearts; the Captain, the jack of hearts. The message seems to be clear: If the murderer isn't apprehended, the higher ranks will be next.

The ‘sketches’ in this... volume are more the substance and length of short stories illustrating the development of the tools of the Masters trade: farce, parody, irony, black humour and wonderful one liners which unerringly hit the mark. The ensuing narrative, however, brings the listener bumpily back to earth with a reminder of the mean and often tragic lives that were being endured in the busy, uncaring metropolis.

Her companion, terrified at having crossed the violent crook Raymond Maldonado, is Bibianna Diaz, no Girl Scout herself.

This is more of a thriller than a mystery. There's a bit of a surprise at the end, but not much. Everyone knows who-dun-it about a quarter of the way in. Even the action to catch the guy is just stuff that happens, rather than a plan. I enjoyed it some, but not as much as others in this series.

I enjoyed this very much. The plot and characterizations are well developed. I understand the criticisms of the narrator. She does indeed take pauses sometime, and it takes getting used to. I think it's usually when the thought is changing, and not when a tight dialog is going on. Her tones of voices are very different for the different characters.
