Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the covert combat ship Oregon have barely escaped a mission on the Congo River when they intercept a mayday from a defenseless boat under fire off the African coast. Cabrillo takes action, saving the beautiful Sloane Macintyre - who's looking for a long-submerged ship that may hold a fortune in diamonds. But what surprises Cabrillo is her story about a crazy fisherman who claims to have been attacked on the open sea by giant metal snakes in the same area.

This book was very good and had interesting and suprising events. The ideas were not easy to predict and though unusual, were somehow believable. My husband felt the book "drug" toward the end, bur I enjoyed it all.

It is 1907, a year of financial panic and labor unrest. Train wrecks, fires, and explosions sabotage the Southern Pacific Railroad's Cascades express line and, desperate, the railroad hires the fabled Van Dorn Detective Agency. Van Dorn sends in his best man, and Bell quickly discovers that a mysterious saboteur haunts the hobo jungles of the West, a man known as the Wrecker, who recruits accomplices from the down-and-out to attack the railroad, and then kills them afterward.

Both my husband and I felt there was way too much rhetoric. We are train fans and modelers and perhaps the descriptiveness was too repetitious because of our knowledge of the trains. We wanted the action to "get on with it".

Cabrillo, chasing the remnants of a crashed satellite in the Argentine jungle, stumbles upon a shocking revelation. His search to untangle the mystery leads him, first, to a small island and its secret, and then much farther back, to an ancient Chinese expedition - and a curse that seems to have survived for more than 500 years. If Cabrillo's team is successful in its quest, the reward could be incalculable. If not, the only reward is death.

This book was well written and had enough twist, turns and different scenarios to hold one's interest throughout the entire book. The books with Juan Cabrillo seem to be my favorites of Clive Cussler.

When the U.S. secretary of state's plane crashes while bringing her to a summit meeting in Libya, the CIA, distrusting the Libyans, hires Juan Cabrillo to search for her, and their misgivings are well founded. The crew locates the plane, but the secretary of state has vanished. It turns out Libya's new foreign minister has other plans for the conference, plans that Cabrillo cannot let happen.

This was one of the best Clive Cussler books I have read with great relationship of current events and past history. The patriotic and "do the right thing" approach to events allowed my total buy-in and made me feel involved in the adventure.

Only Cabrillo could convert the interior of a nondescript lumber hauler into a state-of-the-art spy ship - and only he could take the helm on the dangerous covert missions it carries out for whichever US agency pays the price.

Book was compelling and held my interest. I found the book to be suspensful and entertaining, with adventursome twists and turns which were unable to predict.
