I love to read about economics, history, religion and culture. I am looking for uplifting books that teach me something as well as entertain.

Martha Beck, the beloved columnist and lifestyle counselor from O, The Oprah Magazine, returns with a new prescription for personal fulfillment. The Joy Diet shows readers how to add ten "ingredients" to their daily routine to change the course of their lives: to find purpose, overcome obstacles, heal wounds, and build dreams.

Would you try another book from Martha Beck and/or Kathe Mazur?

I was very hopeful about this book. However, the writer quickly lost credibility. I never made it more than half way through this book as the author's characterizations of others seemed so dishonest.

  • Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

What made the experience of listening to Team of Rivals the most enjoyable?

Listening to this book, I was deeply moved by Lincoln's generosity of spirit and willingness to forgive. During the reading, I felt I came to know and love Lincoln. Even though I understood Lincoln would be assassinated at Ford's theater, I still felt a great sense of loss when the book recounted these events. I have never connected to history this way before. Listening to the book, I felt like I touched the historical soul of my country and was left with the profound desire to be forgiving with "malice toward none; with charity for all."

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lincoln was my favorite character. I also loved learning about each cabinet member.

What about Doris Kearns Goodwin (introduction) and Richard Thomas ’s performance did you like?

At the end, as Lincoln dies, Mr. Thomas's voice breaks.
