Based on true events, Elizabeth Street is a multigenerational saga that opens in an Italian village in the 1900s, and crosses the ocean to New York's Lower East Side. At the heart of the novel is Giovanna, whose family is targeted by the notorious Black Hand - the precursor to the Mafia. Elizabeth Street brings to light a period in history when Italian immigrant neighborhoods lived in fear of Black Hand extortion and violence - a reality that defies the romanticized depiction of the Mafia.

I am partial to Jewish Immigrants' stories so this seemed very interesting. There is no difference between which nationality/religion these immigrants came from. They are our past and that's why their stories are relevant, personal and entertaining.

Welcome back to the village of Ballybucklebo. Come and say hello again to Dr. O'Reilly's odd-as-two-left-feet patients; his housekeeper, Mrs. "Kinky" Kinkaid; and O'Reilly's pets: Arthur Guinness, the beer-swilling black Lab, and Lady MacBeth, the demonically possessed white cat. And of course, to young Dr. Barry Laverty. After Barry's first month as an assistant to crusty Dr. O'Reilly, he has been offered a permanent spot. But Laverty's excitement is dashed when one of his patients unexpectedly dies.

I really loved this book!! It is about World War II mainly in France. I a daughter of Holocaust survivors so I am familiar with many of its books. But this one manages to tell a story from all different points of view! Some parts at the end we're very, very sad but I wouldn't miss it . This book will stay with me for a long time...

The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer's career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track - until the recession hits and she gets downsized, furloughed, escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is one of the "lucky" associates. She's offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, after which there would be a slim chance that she'd get her old job back. In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about.

Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Ken Follett's historical research is brilliant. It is the last book of a trilogy. It brings history to life. Very interesting and even though at times I got the families confused a bit, it did not detract from the whole story. Since I am getting old, it was very curious to read some parts of the history that I lived through personally. Loved it!!!

It can be read by itself or as the continuation of a woman's life in the early 1920s, trying to make an independent career. Charming and though not historic per SE, it shows life during those difficult times. We really came a long way... And it wasn't easy! Light, pleasant reading.
