She's braved battlefields. She's stolen dispatches from under the noses of heads of state. She's played the worldly courtesan, the naive virgin, the refined British lady, even a Gypsy boy. But Annique Villiers, the elusive spy known as the Fox Cub, has finally met the one man she can't outwit... British spymaster Robert Grey must enter France and bring back the brilliant, beautiful - and dangerous - Fox Cub. His duty is to capture her and her secrets for England.

I loved this listen - great narration, evil bad guys and heroic good guys. It was very fun. I laughed out loud as I listened and pretended I could speak French. I found the female protagonist strong, smart, and funny; her male counterpart also appealing. Characters I loved to love and loved to hate. Quite the entertaining "read."

Behind Eli McCain’s Texas drawl lies an extreme sports lover, a former Hollywood stuntman…and a broken heart. Left at the altar a year ago, he’s not happy when Thrillseekers Anonymous, the extreme sports club he cofounded, gets into the celebrity wedding business. Especially since Marnie Banks, the wedding coordinator with the stunning smile and sexy curves, never stops talking. Marnie, meanwhile, hopes planning an A-list celebrity wedding will be her ticket to success. If only her glamorous clients weren’t constantly throwing outrageous demands at her. And if only Eli wasn’t so guarded - and so jaw-droppingly handsome.

I usually enjoy Julia London's historical romance and thought she was branching out when I saw this title. Ooops. It is a re-release of a 10 year old title and you can tell. The heroine is more appealing, perhaps to a younger reader - early twenties maybe? Late teens? It's all about trying to make a fancy traditional wedding work in a remote accessible-only-by-rope-bridge location. Silly premise to begin with and unappealing characters to top it off. I should have been more careful when I purchased it but it had such a nice price... So if you want pretty much mindless fluff at under ten dollars this is a good pick. I liked the narrator's Texas accent for the male lead, but I couldn't get around the ridiculous heroine.

Haunted by the freak accident that killed their father when they were children, Jim and Bob Burgess escaped from their Maine hometown of Shirley Falls for New York City as soon as they possibly could. Jim, a sleek, successful corporate lawyer, has belittled his bighearted brother their whole lives, and Bob, a Legal Aid attorney who idolizes Jim, has always taken it in stride. But their long-standing dynamic is upended when their sister, Susan - the Burgess sibling who stayed behind - urgently calls them home.

I found this book difficult to get through. Unlike some other listeners I think the problem is that it is too well written. I know people who treat each other this way. Elizabeth Strout nailed it. The relationship between the brothers was so difficult during the first third of the book that I cried and would not have continued if it were not my book club's choice for this month. There are no likable characters in this book. Bob is nice, but a little to vague to be truly admirable. Otherwise everyone is so damaged it is painful. It reminds me a little bit of Mrs.Bridge, but perhaps that is just because that book depressed me as well. The story never really lightens at any point. I think the ending is supposed to be happy, and for two characters there is hope. Again I want to stress that the writing is good and the narration good; the book is just pretty much a downer from start to finish.

Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the "Bane and Blight of the Ballisters", and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He's determined to continue doing what he does best - sin and sin again - and all's going swimmingly…until the day a shop door opens and she walks in.

I was going to give this an overall score of 4, but I found myself giving it a 5 for performance and a 5 for story, and recalled that I had a difficult time turning it off. I believe I am too stingy to give a 5 very often, except this one truly deserves the extra star! I thoroughly enjoyed the heroine. She is smart and independent. The hero is definitely damaged, but our lady is smart enough to figure that out and point it out to him in a way he can understand. The performance is perfect. Nothing worse than a good book with a bad reader. I just put two more Loretta Chase / Kate Reading books on my wish list. Interesting and fun. Not too graphic sexually, but enough sexual tension to keep it hot.

On the surface, these seven women are as different as can be - but each has had her share of bad luck, from cheating husbands to sexist colleagues to a legal system that often doesn't do its job. Now, drawn together by tragedy, they're forging a bond that will help them right the wrongs committed against them and discover an inner strength they didn't know they had. The Sisterhood is learning that when bad things happen, you can roll over and play dead...or you can get up fighting...

I bought this because I have seen so many Fern Michaels titles and thought I'd try one. There were so many things I didn't like about this book! The narrator is not my favorite and really does sound far to old. The women involved are pretty much unbelievable - and bloodthirsty. The details are stereotypic and the plot uninteresting. There was not one character I found appealing. I found the accent used for the American born of Chinese descent a bit offensive. The book is old fashioned in thinking and values, not funny, and I just cannot recommend it. Then again, I'm more into forgiveness and healing than revenge and violence. I really can't figure out why I bought this - maybe it was a finger twitch accident!

I loved this one. Laura Kinsale wrenches her reader's heart and doesn't scrimp on anything. She manages to capture the era and tell a dramatic story without being hokey, melodramatic, or offensive. She makes interesting characters interact in interesting ways and does not soften their struggles and pain to make an easy read. She tells the whole story. Good book.

You've already met Rafael Carstairs, the mysterious sea captain who worked against Napoleon in Calypso Magic. He's a civilian now and traveling to see his twin brother, Damien Carstairs Baron Drago, in Cornwell. In the middle of a moonless night, Rafael rescues a young girl, Victoria Abermarle, from smugglers, only to find that she's trying to escape his twin, Baron Drago, who tried to rape her.

This book starts with the rape of a young girl by 8 men in hoods and continues on to tell the story of a pig headed man who doesn't listen to his wife when she says no to sex. Of course he convinces her (by kissing her in just the right place) that "no" means "yes," then steals her fortune, and they go on to fall madly in love, solve the crime and live happily ever after. This is one of those books that gives historical romance a bad name. Personally? I'm not an Anne Flosnik fan either and probably would not have ordered this had I realized her nasal voice would have to be tolerated. I almost stopped listening after the first twenty minutes but decided to finish so I could honestly warn other romance fans that this one is problematic.

Joan Bennet has endured four Seasons without a single suitor or serious flirtation, let alone a marriage proposal. She's had just about enough of being a respectable wallflower and is giving serious thought to embarking on a life of sin, or at least lascivious adventure like the ones described in a popular scandalous book. When she meets her brother's favorite drinking mate, Viscount Burke, it seems her hopes of adventure might be answered . . .

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy. So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves. Complicated? Awkward? Completely. But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary.

I listened to this book over a weekend and it was engaging and entertaining. However, the heroine was cast as an eighteen year old from Ohio. Completely unbelievable that she would have such a precise vocabulary and quirky academic background knowledge coming from the mediocre high school that the author describes. Also unbelievable is the minimal damage she displays having an absentee father and somewhat dingy mother, not to mention close mined relatives. If her background story and age had been more believable I would have enjoyed this story more. For a listen while cleaning house book it was fine.

This is the second Laura Kinsale book I've listened to, and both have been rich in character development and painful in the proximity to emotional disaster the characters allow themselves. Not perfect people, which is always refreshing in what can be a predictable genre. I am an historical romance fan partly because they are easy and entertaining reads/listens. I don't expect to find myself getting teary! But with Laura Kinsale I do. Her books are long enough and rich enough in detail, plot, and emotion that I stay engaged and become involved. The narration is excellent.

This book was slow, long, and felt as though the writer had someone tell her "you need a scene to set up ______________" (fill in the blank). It was like reading an undergraduate's first attempt at a novel with that inability to cut anything out. I know that's pretty harsh, but I kept on going to the end in hopes that one character would finally get around to being intelligent and it just never happened.
