Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

    "Brilliant!"
    Overall

Gail Carriger's debut of the parasol protectorate is just plain brilliant. Set in an alternative Victorian England where werewolves, vampires, and ghosts are productive members of society, Soulless takes the listener on a witty and eccentric mystery ride. While we enjoy a satiric portrayal of social graces in the spirit of Jane Austin, we are entertained by fantastical science in the spirit of Jules Verne. Emily Gray is an excellent choice in narrators for this farce fusion. You will like this book. I can't wait for the other books in this series to make it to Audible.

Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children, unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.

This book is a raw, emotional, human journey through a dark point in life set in a crime novel. I don't know what to tell you besides this is a tough read/listen. It is full of intimate personal connections, mistakes, misunderstandings, and more. This is absolutely not the book I thought it was going to be, but in this case, that was a good thing.

Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style - with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what - or who - they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train.

Gail Carriger does it again. She has written another fantastic book creating another mandatory binge listening situation. Worth it every time. I also always find it hard to decide what my next book will be after I finish a book by Carriger, because what I really want to read is another book by Carriger.

Quentin and his friends are now the kings and queens of Fillory, but the days and nights of royal luxury are starting to pall. After a morning hunt takes a sinister turn, Quentin and his old friend Julia charter a magical sailing ship and set out on an errand to the wild outer reaches of their kingdom. Their pleasure cruise becomes an adventure when the two are unceremoniously dumped back into the last place Quentin ever wants to see: his parent's house in Chesterton, Massachusetts.

This series just does not deliver on any of the possibilities. This story is about a bunch of assholes who continue to be assholes and feel sorry for themselves because they are misunderstood assholes. It is tiresome.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

I am struggling a lot with a review for this book. I wanted this book to be great, but it isn't. The plot is essentially Harry Potter's world meets The Chronicles of Narnia with a touch of the NeverEnding Story. There isn't a lot new here. While I listened, I kept hoping for a twist in the worlds created by other authors, but there wasn't one. I wouldn't recommend this book to others, but I am currently listening to Book 2 in the hopes that the series novelty/hook will be delivered in the second installment of this series.

In The Witch with No Name, Kim Harrison brings back her wildly popular heroine for one final, epic battle. Rachel Morgan's come a long way from the klutzy runner fleeing a bad job. She's faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She's crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She's lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has become something much more.

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame - whatever that is. Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen’s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast.

It begins with a dead body at the far end of Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James Gallagher - and the victim's wealthy, politically powerful family is understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble is, the bottom - if it exists at all - is deeper and more unnatural than anyone suspects...except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant.

The Peter Grant collection a paranormal detective series which takes place in central London. This assembly is a fun listen by a sci-fi author with Dr. Who cred. The stories are interesting with sharp wit, dry British humor, and can withstand ridiculous behaviors like binge listening. I have binge listened to the first three books, and I still love this series. If you like collections like The Dresden Files, you will enjoy this selection. Furthermore, the narrations are a perfect match for the writing. Worth the listen. Highly recommend.

Body and soul. The song. That's what London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho's 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body - a sure sign that something about the man's death was not at all natural but instead supernatural.

Ravaged also involves some interesting character development and fully introduces some newish and definitely awesome characters.
