In northern Iceland, 1829, Agnes Magnúsdóttir is condemned to death for her part in the brutal murder of her lover. Agnes is sent to wait out her final months on the farm of district office Jón Jónsson, his wife and their two daughters. Horrified to have a convicted murderer in their midst, the family avoid contact with Agnes. Only Tóti, the young assistant priest appointed Agnes’ spiritual guardian, is compelled to try to understand her. As the year progresses and the hardships of rural life force the household to work side by side, Agnes’ story begins to emerge and with it the family’s terrible realization that all is not as they had assumed.

Would you listen to Burial Rites again? Why?

Yes, I'd like to listen again to pick up on some of the smaller details/descriptions

Who was your favorite character and why?

Agnes, the character really drew me in.

Which character – as performed by Morven Christie – was your favorite?

Agnes. Morven Christie is an amazing performer. As Agnes her often breathy tone really brought across the feeling of despair. All of the characters are done well. You hardly notice a change in her voice yet it sounds like different people are reading.

If you could rename Burial Rites, what would you call it?

    Hmm not sure.

    Any additional comments?

I bought this book purely based on the fact that Morven Christie was the narrator. I hadn't heard of it before and probably wouldn't have given it a second glance otherwise. I was not at all familiar with the real life event and found this work to be quite surprising and very interesting. I'm now off to google it to learn more :)

As war moves ever closer, the sleepy English village of Crowmarsh Priors settles into a new sort of normal: Evacuees from London are billeted in local homes. The nightly German air raids become grimly mundane. Rationing curtails every comfort. Men leave to fight and die. And five women forge a bond of friendship that will change their lives forever in this engrossing novel of loyalty, loss, and love in the shadow of World War II.With the hardships of war intensifying every day, the women band together to defeat formidable enemies and find remarkable strength within themselves to help one another. It is a war-forged loyalty certain to endure years and distance. When four of the women return for a celebration fifty years later, their mission is not simply to commemorate or remember. They’ve returned to confront a traitor whose actions cost countless lives — and to avenge one of their own at last.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. It was quite a slow start but started to get a bit better midway through. I felt it was lacking a bit, didn't flow as well as I would have liked.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I liked that it was a 'look back' story. The characters didn't unfold well. Felt I was missing something.

Have you listened to any of Tavia Gilbert’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I haven't heard her work before. I thought it was a pretty good performance.

Did War Brides inspire you to do anything?

Not really. I've listened to much more exciting works about the same era.

    Any additional comments?

Has good potential but I think each storyline should be fleshed out more. I felt the story cut off and went back to present day before I got enough from the past.

As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other’s true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face-to-face for the first time.

I liked the story but... the description needs to be changed. This book is very religious yet no mention is made of that in the description?! I was drawn to the book because of the time period and what I read in the description. I felt like everything in the description was 2nd place to the religious parts. I don't have anything against religious texts but when you are promised one thing and get another.....

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong....

    Moving. Thrilling. Heartbreaking

What was one of the most memorable moments of Code Name Verity?

So many to chose from, but I lost my composure when Julie's mother wrote to Kittyhawk

This book was purchased on a whim and not my usual type of read. So glad I purchased it. I've also never written a review before but this book was so good I just had to!
