This author is now one of my favorites. The story was so well told and easy to follow. The narrator was excellent. If you loved the "HELP".... you will like this even more. At times it was disturbing to my heart but it showed how depraved people can be. I loved the way the author developed the characters.
I really enjoyed the interaction between the young "Avenia" and Papa. He was so tender to her little heart that needed to belong. I soaked up the part where he assured her he would always be her family.
Belle... was the most remarkable character. The way she held to truth and was unafraid to defend even though she had been so mistreated.
The masterful way the author told each of the stories so that I did not lose track of the characters or time was artful.
The Book Thief is the same time period.
I really enjoyed each of these readers. I thought that Ms Toren was so believable without overly dramatizing so that I lost sight of the fact this was a book being read.
No.... it was moving, interesting and insightful but it was also hard. The story line of WWII of course is so hard but must be told. I found that at times I just needed a lightness of heart so I would take a break.
I loved the way that the book framed around an art theme. I really enjoyed this. How precious all those works are because they were a glimpse into the tragedy of what mankind is capable of.
This book will now be one of my favorites I have listened to. I am not always such a fan of all of Oprah's book club but this sure lived up to her rave reviews.
The book was so well written. The attention to detail was so exact and drew me into the story line so that I felt I was observing the actual events rather than reading them. I loved her detail without being overly descriptive. Some authors go on too much and then I find myself wanting to skip parts to get to the meat of the book. This was all meat!
It was amazing to me how much the three sounded alike yet different. All were so outstanding.
I would not need to take any of them out to dinner but I would sure love to see the story quilt. I could imagine it in my mind but seeing it would be a delight.
This book is one I will remember fondly for a long time. I felt the SOUTH. I felt for the slaves. I felt for the slave owners. So well written.... I will be reading everything this author writes. LOVED IT
Nope... she is out for me
I thought the book was very repetitive and the character development shallow and boring. It felt like she was just trying to make her book about describing ardent love scenes over and over again. If you are looking for a book with a plot or a book with characters... this was not it. If you are looking for a book with lots of sexy descriptions in nearly every chapter... look no further.
The performer was great
Most of the book.
Not for anyone that is turn off by over used sex scenes.
This was a very strange storyline. Difficult to follow and outrageous. Gave it up after the first half of the story.
I really enjoyed reading this biography of Gracia Burnham. I remember when that took place and so it was great to read the details of the story and her responses to what happened. She did an excellent job of retelling her tale of difficult and painful circumstances and it encouraged me to "walk joyfully" to what is going on at any given time.
I was listening to this read at the same time as watching the series 3 of Downton Abbey. I kept getting the story lines mixed up. They were so similar in the servants quarters. If you love Downton... this will make for a most enjoyable read.
I loved the Masquerade ball at the end.
I liked the way the author painted the verbal picture of this quaint village. The characters were well developed and the story was charming. Predictable without much drama. Reminded me of the Mitford series.
yes... I will probably continue reading the series but need something with some action for the next few. It was a charming story but not engrossing.
This book was so disappointing. It was some sort of Allegorical Read but felt like he was trying to copy THE SHACK. It was long... boring and really preachy. I get was he was trying to communicate but whoa.... it did me in. I decided I would finish it to the end and so I did but it left me with a big disappointing taste.
This was an insightfully written book that made one stop and think about how we treat others. The best part of the book was the reader. She was one of the best I have heard.
