  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Annie M. says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
"One of the best books I've EVER read!!"

If you could sum up Unbroken in three words, what would they be?

    Inspiring, eye-opening, and fascinating!

What did you like best about this story?

The writing was one of my favorite aspects of this book. The way the story was told was top-notch. The actual story was inspirational and also informative. I was hooked in the first five minutes and crying and laughing for Louis in the first hour. Absolutely wonderful- a life-changing read.

What about Edward Herrmann’s performance did you like?

He was perfect! Emotional when necessary but not overly so. He did a wonderful job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely! I did my best!!

    Any additional comments?

Everyone should read this; everything from the statistics to the actual story were things that no one on earth should go without hearing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

    Story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Despite hating the narrator's character for the first 3/4 of the book, the author still found a way to make even the most unlovable protagonist at least human. By the end of the book, I was cheering for him (surprisingly enough). I cried, I laughed, I sat in my car slack-jawed in horror; this book had me all over the emotional spectrum, and I loved every (okay, almost every) minute of it.

What other book might you compare The Kite Runner to and why?

I've never read a book like this. Truly unique as it's from a Muslim's point of view on the fall of Afghanistan.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I love Hassan's "For you, a thousand times over" line. Will never forget that incredible phrase.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Absolutely- both!

On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea. Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon, this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through.

    Story
Would you listen to Lost in Shangri-La again? Why?

Absolutely. This is a truly inspiring story of three plane crash survivors and the brave men who came to rescue them, but it also tells of the deep relationships that can be formed from soul to soul despite no visible common ground to stand on. This was truly a beautiful read.

What did you like best about this story?

That it was TRUE! The author gives such detailed and accurate information about every aspect of the story that the reader feels completely confident in the reliability of the telling. I also loved the focus on the relationships formed between the natives and military men/women. The natives' perspectives on things was refreshing and eye-opening. Very well-researched.

What about Mitchell Zuckoff’s performance did you like?

He was perfect. Too often the author will try to do his/her own audio recording and fail miserably, but Mr. Zuckoff's performance is top notch. Impeccably done and wouldn't change a thing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    YES! Couldn't put it down!!
