This book is beautifully written and performed. The story is wonderful and has the feel of clearly depicting a time gone by. There were times I laughed out loud. The characters had life and I was interested in them and their lives.
If you have never read Doig before, this is a great first read. You'll be hooked.
The writing style is not prose and yet not poetry so it fails on both fronts. Interesting Dystopian situation, fun that it takes place in Colorado and some on the Western Slope.
It takes way too long to work though so small a story.
This is an amazing book- full of stories that dovetail into the main plot. Much to think about!
I was not as interested in his imaginary "best" and "worst" trips- bit his actual trip was a fantastic read!
Very interesting concept- How would humans live in a world with no sun? What native life would evolve in that environment? This book is about twice as long as needed- It's repetitive, repetitive and 20 hours long, long!
Where are the men? The population seems to be women, old men and adolescent boys & girls.
What an absurd conclusion- *Plot Warning* The main character (cop) sends his *girlfriend* into a "sting" operation with a serial killer and rapist... Oh, and the police chief authorizes the operation? I don’t think so!
This book is great if you are into the technical aspects of survival - how many square feet of soil is necessary to grow a potato... How many liters of liquid oxygen to stay alive for X length of time... All the calculations when something goes wrong. There is very little story and lots of technical detail- No fun!
Ken Marks is perfect for the narration- the way he carefully pronounces "t" when it is at the end of a word- has the sound of one of the Westerners of whom he speaks.
You have to fall, at least a little, in love with Ty Hardin. His country, his mules and his life.
This is a great read!
Ah, the surety of the religiously devout! Banks nails this story and concludes with hilarity. One of the greatest modern writers here.
Laurie is a much better actor than author- I'd prefer if he would read books- he has a great voice!
This book is slow and dull- the author tells us whats going on then again then again, then explains it again- I couldn't get through it- made it to the second half and was still facing ~ 6 more hours!
