From the moment she's struck by lightening as a baby, it is clear that Mary Anning is marked for greatness. On the windswept, fossil-strewn beaches of the English coast, she learns that she has "the eye"-and finds what no one else can see. When Mary uncovers an unusual fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her home, she sets the religious fathers on edge, the townspeople to vicious gossip, and the scientific world alight.

    Griffin says: "Wonderful Book!"
    "A great experience"
    Overall

An all-round enjoyable read. The narration is just perfect for the story.

This ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain.

When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding - an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair - only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

    Yvette says: "Amazing, fabulous, wonderful!!!"
    "A 5-star read..."

I was hesitant to buy this book because of the negative reviews regarding the narrator, but the subject interested me enough to take a chance. I'm glad I did -- in no way did Ms. Wren's reading take away from the story. It's true that many of the characters sounded very similar, but Ms. Wren's natural voice felt 'velvety smooth' and, for me, contributed to my overall enjoyment of the book.

Hillary Jordan's mesmerizing debut novel won the Bellwether Prize for fiction. A powerful piece of Southern literature, Mudbound takes on prejudice in its myriad forms on a Mississippi Delta farm in 1946. City girl Laura McAllen attempts to raise her family despite questionable decisions made by her husband. Tensions continue to rise when her brother-in-law and the son of a family of sharecroppers both return from WWII as changed men bearing the scars of combat.

Betty says: "May this South never rise again."
    "Perfect from start to finish..."
    Overall

I enjoyed this book almost as much as I enjoyed, The Help. I say almost just because it wasn't as long. Like The Help, the different narrators in Mudbound added a level of enjoyment to the story that I would never have experienced had I read the book on my own. Once the story began, I did not stop listening nor did I need to 'rewind'. The story flows from the first sentence to the last, a 'down to earth (or mud)' kind of story that tugs at my heart long after I've finished.

  • Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

Why we think it’s a great listen: Want to join the “superhumans”? Luckily you don’t have to run to catch up with them, thanks to McDougall’s and Sanders’ inspiring (and motivating) journey through history, science, physiology, health, entertaining characters and unlikely friendships. Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure.

Corey says: "Amazing read - even for non-runners"
    "I'm taking up running again"
    Overall

Great book from start to finish. Narrator added the icing to this cake! I didn't want the book to end and ended up finding actual pictures of the participants in the race as well as some of the original articles from the author on the web. What an inspirational story.

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

PA Law says: "Haunting and beautiful tale"
    "Engaging, gothic tale"
    Overall

Diane Setterfield's writing is phenomenal and the readers did the prose justice. I might just buy the book to highlight some of the most moving passages about books and reading I've ever seen (or heard). I lost myself in the story and I could not stop listening.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "A Perfect Listen"
    Overall

Want to hear what a 'perfect' audible book sounds like? This is it. The narrators voices are perfect -- each reflects her character in ways I could never have imagined if I simply read the book on my own. I was constantly torn between rushing to find out what happened and slowing down because I did not want the story to end. I still hear the narrators voices days after I've finished.
