Given unprecedented access to La Russa and his team, best-selling journalist Bissinger captures baseball's strategic and emotional essence. We watch from the dugout as La Russa's Cardinals take on their archrivals, the Chicago Cubs, in a thrilling three-game series.

This is a well written book whose knowledge of baseball is up to the task. The author Buzz Bissinger shows this in many ways; most importantly to me is the mention of Charley Lau who is one of baseball?s great teachers of hitting.

It did not hurt that the author makes a slight reference to Samuel Beckett?s Waiting for Godot, for I am also a Beckett reader.

  • Once Before Time: A Whole Story of the Universe

In 2000, Martin Bojowald, then a 27-year-old postdoc at Pennsylvania State University, used a relatively new theory called loop quantum gravity - a combination of Einstein’s theory of gravity and quantum mechanics - to create a simple model of the universe. Loop quantum cosmology, or LQC, was born, and with it, a theory that managed to do something even Einstein’s theory of relativity had failed to do - illuminate the birth of the universe.

    "An Excellent Book"
    Overall

This is a five star book and the reader I found to be very good.

I have listened to many books on cosmology and quantum mechanics and this book is a must ???listen??? and read book.

I have most of the books I listen to on this subject and this book without hesitation will be added to my library.

  • Tree of Smoke: A Novel

This is the story of William "Skip" Sands, CIA, engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong, and the disasters that befall him. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert and into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. In its vision of human folly, this is a story like nothing in our literature.

    "An Excellent Book"
    Overall

This book is well worth the time to listen and well worth the time to read as well.

By page 39 or part one section one Denis Johnson leaves the listener or reader with a wonderful Melville quote from Moby Dick.

I am currently relistening to the book and have marked each part and section of the audio to the book.

If this is not a high compliment and a five star book, I have nothing further to write.

Edna O'Brien's masterly novel, Wild Decembers, charts the quick and critical demise of relations between Joseph Brennan and Mick Bugler, "the warring sons of warring sons", in the countryside of western Ireland. With her inimitable gift for describing the occasions of heartbreak, O'Brien brings Joseph's love for his land to the level of his sister Breege's love for both him and his rival, Bugler.

    "Top Shelf"
    Overall

Edna O?Brien has written a five star book. It is a book that sits next to James Joyce and Samuel Beckett on by book shelf, and it is one of my favorite audio books.

It is hard to understand how this wonderful book had received a one star review. Only those in Ireland who refused to publish Joyce?s Dubliners and those in the U.S. that attempted to prevent Joyce?s Ulysses from being published in America could be so harsh to such a treasure.

I highly recommend this audio format of Wild Decembers and the book in its written version.
