Expertly rendered ghost story thriller. I got burned out on ghost stories many years ago. However, this is not your typical ghost story. It is kind of a cross between a Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child novel and and an Ira Levin tale.
The writer kept the suspense going right up to an awesome finale. It is difficult for a writer to create this kind of suspense and pull off a finale that is not anti climatic but F. G. Cottam pulled it off.
It was evenly successful.
I am looking forward to listening to more books by this author. I am hoping Audible will offer all of his books in this genre.
I had been looking for an author similar to Charles Todd. Many that I tried had a heavy romance aspect which is not my thing. Others were historically inaccurate, didn't ring true, or were boring. Barbara Cleverly is a spellbinding storyteller. Her grasp of time and place is assured and accurate. The Damascened Blade is highly recommended - a fabulous tale.
This is one of the best police procedurals that I have read in a while. Good narrator whose voice was well suited to the story. The author (a former policeman) deals honestly with a difficult subject and manages to tell a great story.
Wonderful addition to the series by a master storyteller. MacDonald does not just spin a great tale, he has a unique world view. The fearful need not enter...
One of year's best,
Author created unforgettable characters in a magnificent story. Highly recommended.
Excellent job by narrator.
Yes!! Very moving: However there were some truly hilarious moments.
I loved this book!
This is a beautiful, unforgettable novel that captures the challenges of a long time New York detective as he balances politics, the law and personal problems in his pursuit of a serial killer. Despite the description, this is an incredibly intuitive and thoughtful police procedural. Kind of the "Godfather" of police procedurals.
Very suspenseful: Lawrence Sanders makes the reader care about his characters - not just his main character - even his screwy villain. You want to know what happens to them.
The narrator's voice and delivery were perfect - very suited to true crime or suspense.
Lawrence Sanders captured my interest and imagination early in the narration. I have been looking forward to writing this review for a while now
I highly recommend this novel, however, I have a few complaints. It may be misnamed: The title may be explained in the text version but I do not remember an explanation. Despite the length and detail, at times, things don't quite "ring true". Maybe this is simply a matter of it being dated. So much has changed, legally and otherwise, since this book was published.Still it is a glorious and wonderful - if flawed - masterpiece. Don't miss it!
Classy, intelligent, thriller.
Story was suspenseful - a real page turner.
He was the perfect choice for narrator.
Looking forward to reading other novels in the series. Val Macdermid is an excellent writer.
I purchased the next book in the series, the Wire in the Blood and it is great too.
Excellent book and narrator.
Sara Paretsky tells a great story that is suspenseful, current, and always well written.
Jean Smart shines when she does Mr. Contreras - a really delightful performance.
Sara Paretsky has produced a worthy addition to the V.I. Warshawski saga.
