  • Haunted Ground

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs)
    • By Erin Hart
    • Narrated By Jennifer McMahon

When farmers cutting turf in an Irish peat bog make a grisly discovery, the perfectly intact body of a young woman with long red hair, archaeologist Cormac O'Callaghan and pathologist Nora Gavin are thrown together by their shared scientific interest in human remains. Because of the preservative effect of the bog, it is difficult to tell whether the body has lain there for two decades, two centuries, or two millennia.

    "Outstanding Read!!"

I guess I understand why there are some less than enthusiastic reviews of this book. If one is looking for the simplicity of a formula romance novel, this is the wrong book. I can imagine the rich historical narrative and the exceptional literary development would be "tedious", in that case. The same goes for pulp mystery seekers. However, if a person is looking for a beautifully written, engaging, historically informative literary story, complete with sufficient mystery to keep one on the edge of one's seat throughout, and a healthy, adult sprinkling of romance, then there isn't much out there that is better than "Haunted Ground". Add to that the pleasant, lyrical narration, and it's a perfect listen!

  • A Christmas Odyssey

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Anne Perry
    • Narrated By Terrence Hardiman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Henry Rathbone is called by an old friend whose son has gone missing 10 days before the Christmas holiday. Now in his early twenties, Lucien has known trouble for some time and has often fallen victim to the vices of drugs, alcohol and women. His father now fears the worst. Their old friend and reformed brothel-owner, Squeaky Robinson, volunteers to help. Henry agrees and, joined by Crow, a young doctor at the clinic, the pair trawls the pubs, brothels, and opium dens of the West End in search of clues.

"NOT a Christmas Novel - even a little."

I love Anne Perry. Every year I look forward to reading one or more of her Christmas novels. This book has nothing to do with Christmas, short of coincidence with a calendar date. It is as dark a book as I've read in a very long time, and I've read at least one Stephen King recently. I stuck it through, waiting for some kind of redemption to the horrible story about human trafficking, and levels of sexual depravity I hadn't previously imagined (and I'm not a prude), and... there was no redemption. The ending was a brief outline lasting a few minutes, in an offhand tone. Up until that point - endless darkness and depravity. The title feels like a manipulation, as does the picture of the cover.

I gave it three stars because it was a decent character study, fairly well written, and wonderfully narrated.

  • Hood: King Raven Trilogy, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Stephen R. Lawhead
    • Narrated By Adam Verner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For centuries, the legend of Robin Hood and his band of thieves has captivated the imagination. Now the familiar tale takes on new life, fresh meaning, and an unexpected setting. Hunted like an animal by Norman invaders, Bran ap Brychan, heir to the throne of Elfael, has abandoned his father's kingdom and fled to the greenwood. There, in the primeval forest of the Welsh borders, danger surrounds him, for this woodland is a living, breathing entity with mysterious powers and secrets.

RJT says: "Extremely well done ... mostly."
"Loved the book, no problem at all with narrator!"

This book hooked me, right from the start. I'm confused by the issues below with the narrator. I'm horribly picky when it comes to narration - I will even put down a great book with a bad narrator - but I loved every bit of this one!

  • Ghostwalk

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By Rebecca Stott
    • Narrated By Rosalyn Landor
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A Cambridge historian is found drowned, clutching a glass prism in her hand. The book she was writing about Isaac Newton's involvement with alchemy remains unfinished. When her son, Cameron, asks his former lover, Lydia Brooke, to ghostwrite the missing final chapters of his mother's book, Lydia agrees and moves into Elizabeth's house. Soon Lydia discovers that the violence that has fallen across present-day Cambridge may have its origins in the troubling evidence that Elizabeth's research has unearthed.

    "Quality Read."

Reading this book was like being led on a tour of fine literature, or sipping the finest wines, or exploring the halls of the colleges at Cambridge. Rich with imagery and history and poetry and literature, it was a peaceful experience. I would say, it is one to focus on, as every sentence carries value. The unveiling of the plot elements can seem to drag, with too few bits being brought forth at times, but I found this worth it as the story winds to its climax - these slower parts hypnotized me and pulled me further into the world(s) the plot is centered in, so that I was fully prepared to accept the story in the shape it revealed itself. NOT an action story!
Beautifully read by the narrator, great historical information!
I'll carry this one with me for a while.
