I assumed all the advertisements and such were hype, but I have to say, this really worked for me to get a good general working Spanish. I've tried others and Earworms is good for travelers, Rosetta Stone is a flop. This is the best I've tried so far.
Secretly we all wish we were 'above' this sort of book. Let me admit that would have been a mistake. I really enjoyed this book. Unlike singly focused non-fiction, presenting loads of information provides a unique context to how we got from being star dust to human beings and just how unlikely it is that you (or I) were even born.
A very narcissistic woman with a great life cries on the floor of her bathroom before dumping it all for an all expense paid trip to Italy, India and Bali. Tough, eh? In the end reality bites (read the bio to figure that out). I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a novel. It is disappointing to realize how truly self absorbed people think the rest of us want to know more about their trivial troubles. But the number of people that bought it speaks for itself. Excellently read.
Just when I thought a favorite author couldn't sink any lower after "Next", Michael Crichton proves me wrong. For someone who has written some of the most creative books and had some of the most brilliant movies produced from his books, its sad to see him produce a silly piece like this that harkens back to the bad b-movies like Empire of the Ants.
That I learned about misconceptions I never knew I had.
Gain the history and inner knowledge of the random
I didn't expect the history lesson. It made what I thought might be a boring topic very interesting.
Dostoevsky, White Nights
Amazingly perseveringly energetic.
A book designed for bedridden children that cannot escape.
I can only imagine my love of Russian literature made this a 'recommended' book. It's likeness to the C.S. Lewis Narnia is only in the fact that it is a slog to get through. Sadly, it bears no resemblance to the Chronicle's brilliance. It's simple-minded plot is dressed up with mind numbing tomfoolery clearly meant to entertain small children. Even I admit I read Harry Potter and Narnia as an adult. The difference is I don't regret it. What a waste of time that could be spent on good Russian literature.
