  • Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Barack Obama
    • Narrated By Barack Obama

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father, a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man, has been killed in a car accident.

Kathryn says: "A wonderful, insightful, non-political story"
"Amazingly true story about Obama told by Obama"

Explains how he became the man we know today as President Obama. Amazing well read by the author himself. It is enjoyable and startling at times ot hear his voice tells you about so many intimate details about his life. It is a story any self-made person can all relate to even though we may not have such exotic life experiences. It is also a lesson in tolerance and race.

  • The Time Traveler's Wife

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Audrey Niffenegger
    • Narrated By Fred Berman, Phoebe Strole

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Scott says: "Epic Drama & Love Story through Time Travel"
    "Excellent Read"

Unlike many books that use impossible circumstances as a premise, this one manages to captivate and make you suspend disbelief. The book is *very* well read by both voices.

  • Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Gilbert
    • Narrated By Elizabeth Gilbert
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned 30, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. She got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world, all alone. This is the absorbing chronicle of that year.

    Kerry says: "Witty and Wonderful"
    "Self Absorbed Musings"

While this book is well read and very entertaining, I found the content to be unsatisfactory. This is a story of a narcisistic women with no serious problems who is unable to figure out why her relationships fail. For those who have experienced hardship and challenging life struggles the book is irritating and potentially offensive.

The story is a woman capable of making Himalayas out of anthills going on a worldwide quest to find herself. In the end, she fails (although that's not how she describes it) continuing to act with the emotional maturity of a small child; making no forward progress despite the assistance of numerous wonderful teachers and friends. The takeaway from the book is to embrace the teachings she is too emotionally immature to internalize. In this way you might find your own path to enlightment and peace of mind.
