Perhaps it wasn't from our time, perhaps it wasn't even from our universe, but the arrival of the 300-kilometer long stone was the answer to humanity's desperate plea to end the threat of nuclear war. Inside the deep recesses of the stone lies Thistledown: the remnants of a human society, versed in English, Russian and Chinese. The artifacts of this familiar people foretell a great Death caused by the ravages of war, but the government and scientists are unable to decide how to use this knowledge.

Elle in the Great NorthWest says: "Enjoyable solid Si Fi-30 years old- still topical"
"A really good mix of science and imagination."

"I'm Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player in a interstellar chess match to save humanity. Seventeen years old. Everyone on Earth knows the tale I am part of. But you don't know my tale: I'm going to tell it to you now, the only way I know how: not straight but true, the whole thing, to try make you feel what I felt: the joy and terror and uncertainty, panic and wonder, despair and hope."

David says: "A fun listen, and some new information, but..."
"Mostly a recap, but good for the overall story"

Not the most exciting book in the series. There's some new info, but mostly it recaps The Last Colony from the point of view of Zoe. It's not necessary, but it does round out the story.

One hundred years ago, scientists would have said that lasers, televisions, and the atomic bomb were beyond the realm of physical possibility. In Physics of the Impossible, the renowned physicist Michio Kaku explores to what extent the technologies and devices of science fiction that are deemed equally impossible today might well become commonplace in the future.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Sure it was. I enjoyed the book, and got a few ideas about subjects I'd like to probe into at a deeper level.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have appreciated some more technical information, as in Kaku's other books.

What does Feodor Chin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A sense of irony and humour.

Was Physics of the Impossible worth the listening time?

    Yes it was.

  • Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 21 mins)

    • Narrated By Emily Woo Zeller

    Story

Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Kirstin says: "Mary Roach Does Not Disappoint!"
"I would love to have a few beers with Mary Roach."

Would you consider the audio edition of Gulp to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, but the audio was fantastic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    The alimentary canal, of course!

What does Emily Woo Zeller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has great inflection, and carries off all the humour with panache.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes
