I am glad I listened to this as an audiobook. I would never have survived the paperback. This story takes a long time to get going and requires you to learn a new set of coloquialisms including a double speech ability. The story does become more interesting, but it hard to get into it at the beginning.
There are some interesting ideas - the houses, vehicles, weapons are all organic plants/animals that are taught to form certain objects. The idea that the native creatures can never lie is also intriguing. I was never sold on the "addiction" to a particular human pair of speakers - humans that communicate with the natives must talk at the same time which requires special brain communication.
But overall, this was work. The performance is great and made the book bareable.
This book will keep your attention, the reading is great. The dialogue is a bit like a soap opera at times. The ending is a little on the weak side, but overall pretty interesting.
This is one of the better books in the series focusing at how currency came to be the source of the English economy rather then just coin. The book does a great job providing a fun adventure story through the streets of London and Europe while educating one on the politics of the time.
The reader is great and really brings out the characters - even to the changing age of the characters. Really good read.
This story focuses more on Jack and Eliza and their adventures. it covers a different part of society during the same time period. Kind of makes you wonder how we came to be given this part of history. The story is engaging and thought provoking. I find the topic interesting and the reading is great.
This is a pretty catching novel of what is a series about a pretty fascinating time in history. While I am not always sure what the point of the book is, the tale is great. The characters kind of flow through life, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. The time period is fascinating and you meet a lot of characters you will see through the rest of the series.
This was a quick read covering some interesting tales with all the favorite characters. I did feel the author got a bit distracted in this book. While the story carries well, the historical side kind of wanders and is hard to keep track of.
The reader was great - I am constantly laughing at some of Jack's antics. Worth the read.
This is a good book to close the series with. Brandon has done a great job with this series and closes out all the loose ends. I loved how he ended the story and how he explained how the world got to the way it was. Pretty inventive ideas.
Great read and great story.
This is a very good history - if a little dated - of the Gestapo. It was written in the late 40s and early 50s when the allies were still learning about the overall history of the Gestapo. This book really demonstrates the total lack of humanity exercised by the Gestapo (if one needed a reminder). It is disturbing to look around today and see just how close society can get to that level - for very similar reasons. It showed just how much in-fighting there was in the german high command and almost how childish they became - except that this all takes place of the absolute horror they created.
The reader is very good. Good historical book to read - but we all know it does not have a happy ending.
This is a pretty good tale about Jack's journey's around the globe touching on several different societies. Eliza also figures prominently in this book and provides an overall excellent adventure. It is sometimes hard to tell the difference between the fiction and reality but that is what makes the book fun to read.
The performance is great and really brings the characters to life. Overall a good read.
I got into this series reading Locus award winners for SCI-FI . Not sure how this series got there. I also did not realize there were 8 books (only three won awards). And then to find out that this is really sort of three books (long ones) broken into 8 books...one can't keep track. This book was covers some pretty interesting historical events and is quite interesting.
The performance is great - the reader gives unique personalities to all the characters. Overall its a pretty good read.
The book is very good. Sanderson has done another great job. The story carries well, the characters are well developed and the plot is very well developed. The reader is great - gets the voices and the attitudes very well. Its a great listen.
