I love applying philosophy to pop culture. It really helps me understand the philosophical concepts-- or makes be believe that I understand them better.
I read a lot of science usually. The philosophy is a mental palate cleanser.
A the ice and fire series is ponderous and begins suddenly. I had to read the series twice before I felt I had a handle on what was going on, and I'm still not sure.
If I was going to begin it today, I would read this for background information first. Skip the afterward, which has three spoilers for those who have neither read the books nor watched the show.

The science v religion stuff was so heavy handed it was silly at times.
He has a very commanding tone.
I read this in preparation of a trip to Rome and the Vatican. If you treat it as a travel guide, it's great. As a story... it's ok.
