In a historic farmhouse outside Boston, seventy-year-old Percy Darling is settling happily into retirement; his grandson, Robert, has long assumed he will follow in the footsteps of his mother, a prominent physician; Ira, a gay teacher at the preschool in Percy's barn, and Celestino, a Guatemalan gardener who works for Percy’s neighbor, each one striving to overcome a sense of personal exile. Choices made by all four men, collide forcefully on one lovely spring evening, upending everyone’s lives, but none more radically than Percy’s.

Jon says: "Great performance, great writing, wonderful story"
    "Loved it"

Julia Glass has written another novel in which I could lose myself. I loved and cared about the characters and the story kept my attention from start to finish. Mark Bramhall's narration is brilliant! He clearly delineates each character and emotions come through without being overly done.

Lake Wobegon is in a frenzy of preparations for the Fourth of July. The town is dizzy with anticipation - until they hear of Clint's ambition to run for Congress. They know about his episodes with vodka sours, his rocky marriage, and his friendship with the 24-year-old who dresses up as the Statue of Liberty for the parade and may be buck naked beneath her robes. In Keillor's words, "It is Lake Wobegon as you imagined it - good loving people who drive each other crazy."

If you could sum up Liberty in three words, what would they be?

I think of Garrison Keillor as the affable host on Prairie Home Companion. This story has some elements I found surprising, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could listen to GK daily!

Now, from the author of Destiny, comes a novel certain to be as talked about, as richly romantic and wicked, as that number one New York Times best seller. Lovers and Liars is Sally Beauman's sensuous, very contemporary story of public masks and secret lives, of a "perfect" marriage that is not what it seems, and of lovers long separated yet destined to meet, tumultuously, again.

Would you listen to Lovers and Liars again? Why?

This is the kind of book I can't put down! Usually I can guess where a mystery is going -- but Beauman kept me guessing. I'll look for other books by this author. I wouldn't listen again because there;s too many other books I want to hear.

A community-service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse.... As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance.

What made the experience of listening to Orphan Train the most enjoyable?

There really was an Orphan train. Christina Kline seems to have captured the experiences of those children. All of American history is not proud and what happened to these children is included in some of the less proud.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Invisible Bridge to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print vesion -- loved the audible one.

    Any additional comments?

This is the kind of novel I can get lost in. I miss it now that I've finished listening. I learned a lot about the 2nd World War and how it affected everyday people in Hungary. It is a perfect book for additional novels about the same characters.

The story is so-so, but character development weak and sex scenes too graphic and frequent. This could almost qualify as an erotic novel. I finished the book, but this is one I am glad is finished.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire....

    "Good mind numbing novel"
    Overall

I gave it only two stars because I could have quit anytime and would have never missed it. However, I needed some mind numbing and this novel did it. If audible books could be given a rating I'd probably rate it an R due to sex scenes. The love making is described in graphic detail which would have been much more acceptable in a strong story line.

Music has set the tone for most of Zoe Baxter’s life. And it’s music that brings her back to love. When fertility issues lead to a divorce, Zoe throws herself into her career as a music therapist. As an unexpected friendship with a woman slowly blossoms into love, she makes plans for a new life, but to her shock and inevitable rage, some people - even those she loves and trusts most - don’t want that to happen.

Controversial subjects including sympathetic characters on both sides of the controversy are a Jodi Picoult trademark and this book is no exception. I thought the ending was a little weak, but as usual enjoyed this JP novel.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you’ve ever loved a dog - or even patted a dog - this book, told from the perspective of man’s best friend, will tug at your heartstrings...and won’t let go until long after Welch performs the last word. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively and by listening very closely to the words of his master.

    FanB14 says: "Artful Surprise"
"Exactly what my dog would say."
    Overall

Dogs are my favorite 4 legged creatures and I have often thought they have some sort of conversation going in their heads. This book is funny, touching, sad, and even philosophical. It is one of the few books I will listen to a 2nd time. I usually don't waste my points on 6 hour books, but I am so glad I did!

I don't know if you have to be a dog lover to enjoy this book, I am and I loved it. I think Spencer Quinn must have been a dog in another incarnation. He seems to know what a dog would think or at least what I think a dog would think. Lots of funny lines and good story line.
