  • The Cuckoo's Calling

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Robert Galbraith
    • Narrated By Robert Glenister

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Tracey says: "Unbelievable debut mystery set in London"
"Murder or Suicide - Cormoran Strike will find out"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Cuckoo's Calling to be better than the print version?

I didn't see that one coming! Gruff and worn Cormoran Strike is a throw back to the down and out Detective genre.
The story develops at a meandering pace but has twists and turns to keep the reader off kilter just enough to not be predictable and boring.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

What other book might you compare The Cuckoo's Calling to and why?

Elements of the story and writing style remind me of Dashiell Hammett.

What does Robert Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

a lovely variety of character voices. It was very nice to be able to distinguish who was who.

  • Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By David Sedaris
    • Narrated By David Sedaris

From the unique perspective of David Sedaris comes a new collection of essays taking his listeners on a bizarre and stimulating world tour. From the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra, from the squat-style toilets of Beijing to the particular wilderness of a North Carolina Costco, we learn about the absurdity and delight of a curious traveler's experiences.

    FanB14 says: "Devout Fan Disappointed"
    "David does it again."

The wide range of life David Sedaris has lived and writes about can only be imagined by most. The tales of his life bring out emotions which are usually kept well in check. Whether seeking parental approval, looking for the perfect Christmas gift, or being the trash man in his neighborhood, David brings the awkward into real life and gives the listener an adventure.

  • Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Robin Sloan
    • Narrated By Ari Fliakos
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

Susan says: "Fun, thought-provoking, mysterious.... and FUN !"
"Add this one to your Must Listen List!"
Would you listen to Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore again? Why?

Yes. The narrator does an excellent job. The story is inviting and the narration lends an edge to the story.

Which character – as performed by Ari Fliakos – was your favorite?

Carl and Mr Penumbra are excellent

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

What do you think happens in a 24-hour bookstore?

    Any additional comments?

I found myself not wanting to stop the story to do other things. At each point I found myself lingering just a little bit to see where we were going with the tale. The 7 hours of listening was hard to break into 30 minute drive pieces. I don't think anyone minded that I didn't hop out of the car when I reached my destination.
