  • Born on a Blue Day: A Memoir

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Daniel Tammet
    • Narrated By Simon Vance

One of the world's 50 living autistic savants is the first and only to tell his compelling and inspiring life story and explain how his incredible mind works. Worldwide, there are fewer than 50 living savants, those autistic individuals who can perform miraculous mental calculations or artistic feats. (Think Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man.) None of them has been able to discuss his or her thought processes, much less write a book. Until now.

    J. Cline says: "Ordinary Life Through Unordinary Eyes"
    "This is an Important Book"

I understand why others may not have found this book to be of great interest other than from the superficial level of the author's great number and language abilities. But as a parent of an autistic child I can tell you that it is an eye opening and important book. I learned so much about how my child learns and thinks from listening to this memoir. To me this was less about the savant abilities and more about all the people along the way that helped Daniel to become a fully functioning and productive person and how they loved him for who he was and gave him room to just grow as an individual. It makes me want to be a stronger person and a more supportive and better parent. Because this was a highly personal book for me I wouldn't expect that people who can't directly relate to the effects of life on the autistic spectrum to be as interested but I am grateful to have listened to it and have bought the hard copy book as well.

  • Full Dark, No Stars

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Craig Wasson, Jessica Hecht
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

    Parusski says: "Eerie, honest, frightening!"
    "Really Fun."

Stephen King is hit-or-miss for me. After listening to these I have decided that he is a much better short story writer than novelist. These were good stories that were a fun listen and renewed my faith that King can spin a good yarn.

  • Killing Floor

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Lee Child
    • Narrated By Dick Hill

All is not well in Margrave, Georgia. The sleepy, forgotten town hasn't seen a crime in decades, but within the span of three days it witnesses events that leave everyone stunned. An unidentified man is found beaten and shot to death on a lonely country road.

Ed says: "Comic book tough guy"
"There are many better books out there."

I had a hard time getting through this. It was predictable, full of stereotypes and contained violent scenes that were excessive and added little, if anything of value, to the story. I don't usually write negative reviews and this was my first Lee Child book so I have no basis for comparison with this author's other books. My favorite mystery/thriller writer is probably Henning Mankell and this is not even close to that quality. Obviously other people liked this book a lot so I am not sure why it didn't work for me but it didn't.
