Students are currently reading 2 Laurie Halse Anderson books in ELA. Mandy Siegrried does a great job, but I do find her pacing slower than the story and listen to it at 1.25x instead of the recorded slower pace.
Mr. Freeman is a strong character, being there for Melinda as she opens up. He gives her opportunities to express herself.
Mandy Siegfried has a squeaky voice which fits great for many of the characters. She also has pretty good range for the interior monologue.
Speak has already been made into a feature length film. Abigail Breslin would play a good Matilda, Alison Gold should play Heather; . Asa Butterfield as David; Bella Thorne as any of the Marthas'; Birdy as Nicole; Ariel Winter as Ivy; Martin Garrix as IT (Andy Evens)
This book has limited appeal. Although a good book for high/low readers it's fantasy content masked in reality can be hard for inexperienced youth. The audio book is a great interpretation of the book. The audio book helps students understand how slang can be written to give a clear idea of how the character talk.
I would recommend it to other teachers how work with a demographic that can relate to the content. It is a good book that has content that will get students reading to start or end the year.
This performance by J.D. Jackson does justice to the content, slang and pace of the book.
Rewind - just one more time.
Fahrenheit 451 is a staple in my classroom. This is a great "New Classic" for students to see what pacing, punctuation and style can do for a story. This is a great book to do while history class works on WWII. It has great historical and present day issues. I will listen to it many more times, with and without my students.
Captain Beatty shows how those in power are not always what they seem. As an avid reader and 'Fireman' his is a character that can give students great jumping off points to think about those in power and choices that we make "On the outside" vs who we are "On the inside"
Stephen Hoye's performance on Fahrenheit 451 was exceptional. His pace, tone and variation works great.
When Clarisse and Guy get to know each other and see Guy's mind begin to open.
