When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows.

Big long disappointment. I loved Cuckoo....but this one just dragged on and on with a long rambling novel within a novel, explicit descriptions of gore, and by the time it ended I didn't care who the killer was or why.

Someone Else's Love Story is beloved and highly acclaimed New York Times best-selling author Joshilyn Jackson's funny, charming, and poignant novel about science and miracles, secrets and truths, faith and forgiveness; about falling in love, and learning that things aren't always what they seem - or what we hope they will be.

Another fun crazy story from Joshilyn Jackson made perfect through her narration! Shandy is another terrific character and strong female protagonist. If you haven't listened to any of Miss Jackson's books I can recommend all of them- I think this one rivals gods in Alabama as my favorite.

A debut of extraordinary distinction: through the trials of one unforgettable family, Ayana Mathis tells the story of the children of the Great Migration, a story of love and bitterness and the promise of a new America. In 1923, 15-year-old Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia, hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment and watches helplessly as her firstborn twins succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented.

I was never able to develop any empathy or admiration for any of the characters. I was relieved when I finally finished it. Best of the "tribes" was the story of Ella and Pearl and I would have liked to heard more of that one. The most likeable character was August even though he was a no account lady's man for most of the novel. He loved his children and wife and I wonder how he felt about giving up Ella. Did he know? I did not care for Hattie at all.

Though they've lived their entire lives less than five blocks from each other, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders exist in very different worlds. Reuven blends easily into both his secular Jewish faith and his typical American teen life, while Danny's conservative Hasidic clothes and appearance make him stick out in any crowd. Their improbable friendship teaches them that the differences separating people through cultures and generations are never as great as they seem.

Enjoyed this again 40 years after I first read it. I can still see my dog eared paperback in my mind's eye. It was and is still an interesting read from a time, place and culture totally foreign to me. I found I had a lot more empathy for Danny's father this time around

At seventeen, David "Lizard" Hochmeyer is nearly seven feet tall, a star quarterback, and Princeton-bound. His future seems all but assured until his parents are mysteriously murdered, leaving Lizard and his older sister, Kate, adrift and alone. In a mansion across the pond from their Connecticut home lives the world’s greatest ballerina, Sylphide, and her rock star husband, whose own disasters intersect with Lizard’s - and Kate’s - in the most intimate and surprising ways.

Meet Hola. She’s a nightmare, but it’s not her fault if she tackles strangers and chews on furniture, or if she runs after buses and fried chicken containers and drug dealers. No one ever told her not to. Worse yet, she scares her family. Hola may be the most beautiful Bernese mountain dog in the world, but she’s never been trained - at least, not by anyone who knew what he was doing.

Not quite up to Koontz's Trixie or One Good Dog but a darn good story. Not sure how much was fictionalized but based on the author's Bernese Mountain Dog Hola. The narrator was spot-on with his timing and Hola's thoughts are loud out loud fun! A little draggy (for me) on some of the dog training philosophy otherwise would give it 5 stars

For a curious boy like Jess Hall, growing up in Marshall means trouble when your mother catches you spying on grown-ups. Adventurous and precocious, Jess is enormously protective of his older brother, Christopher, a mute whom everyone calls Stump. Though their mother has warned them not to snoop, Stump can't help sneaking a look at something he's not supposed to - an act that will have catastrophic repercussions, shattering both his world and Jess's. It's a wrenching event that thrusts Jess into an adulthood for which he's not prepared.

I love all things Southern Literature and so much wanted to like this...but I can not make myself finish it. The characters are caricatures, the story so-so, and the narration is just awful. The sheriff is the only decent tolerable voice. Jess and Adelaide just make me wince with every word spoken. I understand regional accents are difficult (and I probably am fooled by every Boston, Maine, New York narration I hear) but I give up on this one for the sake of my ears and the silliness of the story line. Sorry! Just very disappointed
