Even centuries later, the final decades of the 20th century are still regarded as one of the darkest and most perilous chapters in the history of humanity. Now, as an ancient and forbidden technology tempts mankind once more, Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise must probe deep into the secrets of the past, to discover the true origins of the dreaded Eugenics Wars - and of perhaps the greatest foe he has ever faced.

    "An entertaining Trek book"
    Overall

This was a fun listen. Although the story focuses primarily on characters other than the crew of the Enterprise, it was very engaging. I was highly entertained by the well-paced plot and particularly enjoyed Anthony Steward Head's various characterizations. Well worth the price.

A gripping literary psychological thriller about a young woman and a peculiar taste for flesh, this is the spellbinding new book from the winner of the 2003 PEN/Faulkner Award.

"creepy, funny and very well written"
    Overall

Darkly funny, literate and well-paced, A Carnivore's Inquiry was a pleasant surprise -- much better than I was expecting it to be. The reader was absolutely pitch perfect for narrator Catherine and did an excellent job not only differentiating the other characters, but communicating the essence of each. (In fact, this is one of the best read audiobooks I've ever listened to.)

The only negative is that there weren't many surprises, but this was due primarily to the fact that the book description was more revealing than necessary. In other words, you know where it's going, but in this case, the getting there was worth it!

The outcast youth Ishmael, succumbing to wanderlust during a dreary New England autumn, signs up for passage aboard a whaling ship. The Pequod sails under the command of the one-legged Captain Ahab, who has set himself on a monomaniacal quest to capture the cunning white whale that robbed him of his leg: Moby-Dick. Capturing life on the sea with robust realism, Melville details the adventures of the colorful crew aboard the ship as Ahab pursues his crusade of revenge, heedless of all cost.

    Overall

I must confess that I hated this book the first time I read it and so was very pleasantly surprised to find that listening greatly improved the experience, so much so, that I've actually begun reading it again. Its true, parts are dull (catalogue of whales, etc.), but other parts are, amazingly, quite funny. I can finally see why it's considered one of the greatest of all American novels -- the adventure plot and provacative themes make for an engrossing listening experience. The only negative (hence the four-, instead of five-, star rating) was the narrator -- at times, I found his diction and tone a bit annoying.
