This was a fun and exciting read! I have downloaded the entire series! Searching for more by Linnea Sinclair, hope they will put her other works on audio!
I'm sure that Stephanie Laurens writes great, fun, romance as always, and her audiobooks are pretty much auto-buys for me. But wow, I am going through shock listening to this narrator. Her accent at first seems interesting -- not great -- but I can tolerate a lot that others don't. But after the first chapter, I found myself cringing. Not a lot of different in 'voices' or different characters, so that's difficult to follow, although there seems to be some quality of the main 'voices' that seem rather grandmotherly, and sorry, but I don't want romance reads to make me think of grandmothers! But it's the intonation and the almost 'gaspy' sound that really started to get on my nerves. I seriously am going to return this one and get the ebook to read instead, although I've managed to get 2 hours into the story! PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS NARRATOR EVER AGAIN!!!
This was a must have for me! This is the first book I remember reading entirely on my own and by my own choice. Because of this story, I gained a lifelong fascination with reading fiction. How fun to have found it again nearly 40 years later!
Maybe it's me, I just can't seem to find a
Good listen these days -- this is another in a list that I downloaded and couldn't finish. Got about halfway, and with many rewinds included, and realized that not only could i not concentrate on this story, but I don't even feel like I've missed anything! The narrator's voice makes me sleepy but otherwise could be ok if the story was more interesting. Can't bring myself to finish.
I really hope that future books in any if the series I read are not ever narrated by Napolean Ryan. I rarely write poor reviews if I can help it, but this narrator irritates me. His female voices are too wispy and his male voices, other than Montague and Stokes are annoying -- especially Barnaby whom he makes sound like a bored, arrogant fop! I keep having flashbacks to the Scarlet Pimpernel movie with Anthony Andrews and how he portrayed Percy Blakeny as the bored darling of society...
That said, the story itself is great! As usual, Laurens has written a fantastic story of romance and adventure with some fun plot twists -- just when you think you know what's going on, something happens to change your mind. I do wish there was more development of the romance between Montague and Violet though -- it seems to brake a backseat to the continuing relationship of Barnaby and Penelope throughout the majority of the story.
I admit, I only made it through part 1 of this download. Just can't bear to waste more time on this one -- and I'm one if those people that rarely gives up on a story. The premise sounds good but two hours in I was already bored. Too many history lessons built into the writing that really don't explain or connect well enough to the story. Too many events not plausible as depicted. The 'love' seems more like a bored fascination than any true feelings from either hero or heroine. And the net speak sounds like reading my teenager's text messages -- cliche-ish and trite. And overdone.
I love the Bastion Club series -- perhaps my favourite of Stephanie Laurens' novels! I highly recommend the books! But why the switch in narrators? After listening to Jill Tanner through the first 6 audiobooks, I had gotten used to her narration, so the switch to Steven Crossley is jarring! I do not mind the switch from female to male voice in general, but it is hard to differentiate Crossley's 'voice' for different characters. It's sometimes a little confusing when the 'voice' switches between hero and heroine. Also, Crossley pronounces some of the names differently than Tanner did. So while I highly recommend Laurens' novels, it's difficult to recommend this particular audiobook based on the narrator. Sorry to see that the remaining books are also done by Crossley. I will buy them because I'm one of those that wants a complete series, but hope the narration improves.
