I really enjoyed this book and found the teachings very helpful and beautiful. It may be too much for a beginner, but if you already have some Buddhist background you will probably find this book well worth your time. I plan to listen to it again because I know there is more than I could possibly get on just my first listen.
This book gave me new respect for our Native Americans. The European settlers took more and more, but again and again the Native Americans tried to live in peace, tried to compromise until they were pushed to their breaking points. But, eventually the settlers took all their land, took their resources, slaughtered their people, and imprisoned the remaining Native Americans in the least desirable parts of the country.
I think this is the first time that I've heard this part of our history, and also heard the voices of the Native Americans. It's more than a historical accounting of what happened in that time, but gives a real feel for the forces at work, the people involved, and the immeasurable suffering and deaths of so many good people.
Mr Clines has a heck of an imagination! This book starts out with some odd things, and then you start to see more things, and it builds and builds until you wonder how on earth Mr Clines came up with it all. In addition to the action, the characters are very engaging and likable which adds to the total impact. I had a very good time listening to this one. He even managed to end it in a way that feels good.
This is the first book I have read or listened to on the craft of writing, so I have nothing to compare it to. But, I thought it was a very good book. Mr. Stein presents a lot of very good ideas and things to think about, and presents them in a way that is easy to understand. I think this is a very helpful book and time well spent. I'm considering buying a print copy so I can study it in more detail and highlight the parts I need to study more.
I'm all for setting a beautiful scene, and a wonderful command of language to bring you into that scene, but at some point one must get on with things. Unfortunately this never seems to get on with anything, and after a couple hours of descriptions I had to put the thing down. I see that others think it's wonderful, but unfortunately it didn't work for me.
You think you know what's going on, but you don't. Just when you think you have something figured out, there is another twist and turn and you are totally surprised. I didn't want to stop listening! Maybe the ending could have been better, but I'm not sure how one would end a story like this. My goodness though, what a story.
I'm not a fan of romance novels so I'm not sure why I bought this one. I fell for the good reviews from others who feel differently.
Perfect gorgeous girl, perfect hot guy, problems to overcome, and then they get together in hot, passionate love. Yep, that's the formula and it was used again here. I couldn't even finish it, or I didn't think I needed to because it was obvious how it was going to go by the time I was half way through. There's 5 hours of my life I could have spent on something more meaningful.
I know about attachment parenting. I know my self. There probably isn't anything new in this book. That's what I thought. But, I found this book more interesting than I expected. There was information that made me look at myself in a new way, and gave me a better understanding of myself and some of the things I feel. Give this one a try. You might find some helpful things too.
Short, but fun. The story will keep you interested, and I had a good time listening to this one.
I might not have chosen this myself but it was a gift, and it turned out to be a beautiful gift indeed. What a touching glimpse into people's lives.
No wonder this book and this author have been so respected and famous. It is a very worthy book. It is engaging, easy to listen to, easy to follow so it's not a difficult book, but it has a lot to say. I think it's a credit very well spent!
