Anne Jocelyn was beautiful, wealthy, charming and spoilt to the core. She was also killed on a beach in Brittany early in the war. Her estranged husband inherited her money and, three years later, is planning marriage once again. So when Anne arrives at the family home unannounced, having at last escaped Nazi-occupied France, it is a terrible shock. It is even more shocking when a woman close to her is found murdered….

This is a wonderful example of Patricia Wentworth's mysteries, and very well performed by Diana Bishop. While it is not her usual country house mystery, it is reminiscent of her early romantic adventure novels, with a murder added in to increase the intrigue. I really enjoyed it.

Adriana Ford, a former actress, has always enjoyed being the focus of attention. Until, that is, that focus seems to be centred on hastening her death. First she felt herself being pushed downstairs. Then there was the bowl of poisoned mushroom soup. When she found one of her tablets tampered with, it was the last straw. She approaches Miss Silver discreetly and is given some sound advice, which she chooses to ignore.

I have no complaints about the book itself - I adore almost all of Patricia Wentworth mysteries and this one is, if not the best, certainly a good example of her style. This audiobook version though, is certainly not Diana Bishop's best performance. Normally a good part of the reason I buy the Miss Silver books on audio when I already have all the paperbacks is because Ms. Bishiop's performance is reliably excellent. This time, unfortunately, she was doing almost the exact same voice and accent for two major characters (male and female, at that) who had a number of dialogues together - it made it very challenging to figure out who was the one talking at any given time, and greatly distracted from the narrative.
