Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of 18th-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas. There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret.

    "Great Adventure Book"
    Overall

The printed books are outstanding, and somehow Katherine Kellgren makes them even better in her reading. Few books offer this much adventure, especially for girls. The entire series is a must for young (above 12 unless you want to have to explain things) and old. This is a series I will have waiting for my granddaughter when she getting older.

From #1 New York Times-best-selling author Nora Roberts comes a novel of a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed, and danger that brings them together - and that could tear them apart… As a professional house-sitter and freelance writer, nothing ties Lila Emerson down - not her work, not a home, and definitely not a relationship. She spends her life moving from one job to the next, sometimes crashing at a friend 's Manhattan apartment. And though she can appreciate her clients ' extraordinary homes, their expensive collections, and their adorable pets, Lila has never longed for possessions of her own. Everything she has, including her heart, is portable.

Would you listen to The Collector again? Why?

Yes, I often listen to her books a couple of times because I enjoy the characters so much. The characters in The Collector are like good friends you want to visit again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Collector?

I like the parts with the dog and the reveal of the final painting.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

It was a good performance. I thought her male voices were believable, which I find many female readers to struggle to provide.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It wasn't because of the suspense of the plot, but the characters you are want to know more about.

    Any additional comments?

Nora Roberts is one of those gifted writers who pulls you into the world she creates. You want her main characters to be your friends and the opportunity to share their joy.

91 year-old Ira Levinson is kept concious after a car wreck by visions of his late wife, Ruth, who recounts stories of their lifetime together. A few miles away, at a local rodeo, Sophia Danko, a senior at Wake Forest, meets a young cowboy named Luke. Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

A Nora Roberts fan will enjoy it

    Any additional comments?

I love the Irish setting of many of her books. But the accents were hard to follow in this audio version. I had a hard time to remind myself that the characters were young. They all sounded like people in their forties.

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens. Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries.

    Any additional comments?

I have read and listened to “A Discovery of Witches” more than a dozen times over the past year. I waited for “Shadow of Night” like a child eagerly anticipates Christmas. In this new book, Deborah Harkness weaves a beautiful story as the main characters escape into the past. The new characters in the story are refreshing and endearing. Once again, Jennifer Ikeda does a marvelous performance of every character. Also, as a history major in college, I found the detailed information on the Elizabethan era of England interesting. With all of that said, I missed some the “magic” found in the first book. I felt the detailed historical information slowed the storyline. Matthew’s point of view is rarely provided. I missed the quick wit exchanges between characters, the faster pace to the storyline, and the peaks and valleys in the storyline of the first book. While I recommend the book and, once again, eagerly await the third volume, I am hoping that the full magic that Harkness has the ability to provide in her writing will be found in the next book.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Enjoyed the characters and the story line. She does a good job of developing this world that is segmented according to virtues, and once again shows how the desire for power corrupts.

In the third book of the "Bloody Jack" series, unlikely heroine Jacky Faber, a pirate at heart, returns to the sea in a truly swashbuckling tale filled with good humour, wit, and courage. After leaving the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston--under dire circumstances, of course - Jacky boards a whaling ship bound for London, where she hopes to find her beloved Jaimy. But things don't go as planned, and she is off on a wild misadventure at sea.

    L. A. Meyer does it again with this excellent adventure series. Katherine Kellgren is wonderful in her reading of it. She brings each character to life. This is one book that keeps everyone on the edge of their seat waiting to see what is going to happen next.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

"Outstanding - very creative and well written"
    Overall

Deborah Harkness invites you into a new and exciting world of vampires, witches and demons. The writing flows smoothly and every phrase pulls you deeper into this world and captures your heart and imagination. The only problem is the fact that this is the first of three books, and you hunger for the next one as soon as you read (or listen to) the last word.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, but what she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

    "A Great Read"

By having the book written from the child's viewpoint enables you to see this story of survival from a different perspective. I think it would be almost unbearable to read the story from the mother's viewpoint simply because of her own grief and anger and hate. Without all of Jack's questions, you really would not believe the story because that is what kids do - they ask a million questions. It is truly a story of the love of a mother for her child.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life — a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescue. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare.
