  • Pimp: The Story of My Life

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu’s Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today’s black community. By telling the story of one man’s struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn’t change; it just has a different swagger.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Although I know it makes the story, I found the language a little raunchy. I would try to tone it down a little, but I think that might take away from the story. Guess I am caught in a quandry.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pimp?

For me, the Pimp's first trip to jail was memorable because I put myself in his mother's place and could feel her pain.

What about Cary Hite’s performance did you like?

Added to the story because of the inflections and change of dpeed when he was attempting to make the picture more vivid.

Could you see Pimp being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I could see this being made into a movie, but only if the Reynolds brothers produced it. I feel that Spike would try to make it a historical piece and Tyler would attempt to make it funny. It is historical, but I don't think Spike would be able to allow the use of the language which was used in the book. Without a doubt Edris Elba should be the Pimp.

The historic hotel in Boonsboro has endured war and peace, the changing of hands, and even rumored hauntings. Now it’s getting a major face-lift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. As the architect in the family, Beckett’s social life consists mostly of talking shop over pizza and beer. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was sixteen.

Would you listen to The Next Always again? Why?

definitely would listen again. I like to listen to hear anything I might have missed.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think my favorite character was Beckett because he was so very understanding and patient and so very good with the kids and a gentleman.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

I liked most of his voices, except the kids at times.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Real Feelings

    Any additional comments?

I liked this audio book because I lost my husband when I was very young and Clare aptly reminded me of the feelings I had. It was good to know I was not alone, even if it is fiction.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fever to be better than the print version?

Yes, because I can have it read for extended periods of time rather than sitting down to read. The content was about the same. I like the unabridged much better in general.

If you’ve listened to books by Maya Banks before, how does this one compare?

I would say that her books are generally the same--love, sex, problem, problem solved, then marriage at the end. This one had a twist at the end, which kind of took my breath away.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Do not want to divulge because that might ruin it for others.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Romance in the wild.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who like trash novels. I am not saying that in a negative way, but the book didn't seem to have a plot or purpose to me.

Has Exiled turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. Because I hae read several books in this genre, I am not turned off. I also have read and enjoyed other books by Nora Roberts, this one was not one of them.

What three words best describe Vanessa Caine’s voice?

It was good for creating pictures in your mind about what was going on with the protagonist.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Exiled?

The end with everything coming out all rosy.

If you could sum up The Witness in three words, what would they be?

    Exciting, mysterious, mind boggling.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the changes of scenery painted by the reader. It went from a hot night club encounter to a steamy event at the lake house to a chase. It didn't stop there. The entire book kept changing like this keeping you wanting to hear more and more.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The excitement in her voice, the compassion she seem to show, the desperation she displayed at points.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It made me want to stop driving so that I could finish listening to it, but it was too long. I sat in m garage several times, and did uneccesary driving at other times so I could hear more and more.

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.
