Joseph Boyden's first novel, Three Day Road, was a Today Show Book Club selection. Through Black Spruce is the exceptional follow-up to his acclaimed debut. Cree bush pilot Will Bird lies comatose in a hospital, while his wayward niece Annie arrives to sit in silent vigil by his side. Slowly their stories reveal two people previously separated by great distances, beaten and broken, and searching for some sense of where they belong in the world.

A great combination of thriller and Naive American tale. It starts a bit slow but then takes off. Wonderful characters reflecting a broad spectrum of Native Cree life from town to city to the bush.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Lore says: "Book 1 of a great series that is not to be missed!"

As an on-and-off again fantasy reader, I am pretty particular about my books. This audiobook hooked me from the beginning and really, throughout the series never let up. Even the ending was fantastic. Aside from tension, the series was incredibly creative and mixed a fair bit of religion and philosophy into the story to deepen the plot. It was a fantastic series!
