This book was a slow start for me. It kept losing me in the beginning and let me say that the violence in this book makes it one to be approached with caution for those of the faint of heart.
Of course, what should I have expected, since the very beginning of Australia was steeped in violence. But I tell you that by the middle of this story, I was listening until 3 in the morning and in a great upswing to my health, walking a mile past my usual walk. My husband was marveling that I was willing to do the dishes and his part of the laundry just so I could keep listening.
It's a good book, just hang in there. It pays off...
I bought this book in the $4.95 sale and I'm delighted to say I've found a new author to love. I needed one since my other favorites are getting bogged down in their series which are beginning to get a little tired.
This book is humorous and light which, I needed since I just finished a very dense Rudolph IIII, Holy Roman Emperor
The Characters are fun and there is mystery and romance and a hot SCOTT. I don't think he rivals Jamie yet but I think he has promise.
I'm going to get the rest of the books and eat them up. I'm always excited when I find a series that I can read back to back because I've come late to the game. What a find!
Ms. Carriger is going on my author watch list.
When I heard the music come on to signal the end of this book my jaw just dropped. NO WAY, I exclaimed! NOTHING was resolved.
This was sold as the LAST in the trilogy and it was just such a shabby thing to do to people that have invested their money and time in the earlier books. I think this is one of the times that Audible should do the right thing and give my credit back. It's better than nothing since I cant get back the wasted time I booked while listening to it.
Diana Gabledon left her last book in a cliff hanger but people also know there is another book coming. After that I promised myself I was not going to read a series that takes longer than a year to get the next book out. I was tricked into this one.
Thank goodness the narrator is so great. I sat miserably through all the horrors of the first World War which didn't really tell me anything new, in hopes of the continuations of the story.
****** spoiler.******* below.
What happens to Victoria,\? How did Hawke feel about what happened to Ben? Does Joshua come out of it? Do people know about what Ben did? Who gets to run the company? What about Sara???????
I'm am so furious right now..... what a jip!
I'm a good cook. that is when I'm not being lazy and (gasp) sticking a vacuume packed Hormel roast into the microwave for a fast dinner so I can fall exhausted into bed and be finished with feeding my hungry husband.
This book makes me feel guilty for doing that and believe me, that's not an easy thing to do. Chef''s story is intriguing and his reading/telling of it is equally delightful. It's good that I'm not a waitress or line chef in his restaurant because I'd probably be the silly girl that fell victim to his "in the moment" charms. This chef is also HOT.
I won't be ordering fish or Monday or eating brunch on Sunday in the future. Whether you are an eager young chef or someone that just likes to eat out a lot, this book is for you. If you like to mess around in the kitchen, this book is definitely for you.
If you are looking for a recipe/how-to book.... Keep looking, This isn't it.
Now that I've finished hawking the closest restaurant death notice so I can swoop in and buy their almost new restaurant gauge equipment, I have to run out now so I can pick up ONE good chef's knive.....
Eat on in peace......
I have start this review by saying that this was a sleeper surprise for me. I kept seeing this book jump out at me on The New York Times best seller list and a few others. I was in a lull in my reading material so I purchased it and I must admit that I liked it a lot.
It was one of those books that made me think about issues while not reading it and that is always a good thing.
Scott Holst was really a great reader and I think he may have been at least 50% responsible for the pleasure I gained from listening to it.
I'm glad of the decision to read it.
I think I will give a warning to others not to give up on this series but since I didn't, maybe there is no need for a warning after all. I grew very frustrated with this book all the way to the last quarter of the story. There were times I wanted to scream WHY at Joe and bump my head against my desk. I didn't of course since all my co-workers would have been curious and found me out for listening to this story at work. Yes listening, I decided to listen to this series on Audible and a good thing it was too because it was the excellent narrator that kept me going to the end. He is unbelievably excellent! He rivals my regard for Davina Porter which is usually unrivaled.
I'm going to say that by the end there was NO WAY I could leave the rest of the books unread and felt I had a vested interest in the Bloody Nine and the others as well. I will save the rest of the review for when I'm finished with the series as I'm starting the third book now and continuing. I'm a girl reading this and so want to say thanks to Joe for the TINY shred of romance he's let trickle into the books.... yea yea... I had to say it.
READ ON... you will be glad you hung in there.
Why in the world would someone expect another really good writer in their own style to set out to produce a story "JUST LIKE" Outlander. Just because it involves traveling back in time doesn't mean it has to be compared. Why not just enjoy it for what it is. A good story, well worth the listen.
I will say as a matter of small complaint, that the narrator was a little "meek" for what I thought Eva might really be like but just the fact that I was thinking about that, means that the author did her part in building the character/s for me. I feel like I know Trelowarth.
I do wish the story had been longer and I suppose that too is a compliment to the writer. I think there is room for another story and do hope that Ms. Kearsley will have a care for those of us that truly loved the story and tell us more.
Listening to this story was like settling down for a full bodied cup of tea on a rainy afternoon, snuggled in your favorite blanket in front of a fire. I truly had trouble making myself stop listening when I got to my desk at work or home after a long commute. It wasn't just that I loved waiting to see what happened next to Sophia or John but also to Carrie... it was like getting two books in one. Susanna Kearsly did such a great job pulling me right into the castle and the cottage that I felt like I was there. I really enjoyed every moment of listening to Rosalyn Landor, her voice lulling me into other places and times. This is definitely worth the credit. I just wish it had gone on and on.....
I don't know why everyone was whining about the narrator for this book. Susan Ericksen does a great job with this book. I knew she was a good reader from other works I have heard her read. I actually liked her better than the original reader. I had no problem at all keeping up with her pronunciations. Don't let the complaints about her deter you from listening to this book because I think it's probably the best in the series.
I was irritated in the first book about how easily Ms. Moon killed off characters that she let us get attached to.but book by book she's gotten better and better at building the characters and allowing them to survive the rest of the story.
I'm going to be really sorry when this ends. I'm as attached to the Fox and Pax as I am to Jamie and Claire.
If I'd been reading this instead of listening to it, I'd have been scanning pages. That would have been a shame because it's so short, I'd probably have been able to read it in an afternoon.
I think that I've been had. I'm such a fan of her books that I just automatically buy them. I'm not going to buy any more anita books. If she is going to write a story as short as this, she should bundle it with other stories and not rip us off. All my friends, Richard and Jean Claude, Nathaniel and Micah.. will just have to go on without me.
I'd say that she needs to move on and start a new series but now I'm thinking Ms. Hamilton just doesn't have it in her. What a shame.... she was the best.
