In this first collaboration by science fiction masters Larry Niven (Ringworld) and Gregory Benford (Timescape), the limits of wonder are redrawn once again as a human expedition to another star system is jeopardized by an encounter with an astonishingly immense artifact in interstellar space: a bowl-shaped structure half-englobing a star, with a habitable area equivalent to many millions of Earths…and it’s on a direct path heading for the same system as the human ship.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    Maybe a robot.

Would you ever listen to anything by Larry Niven and Gregory Benford again?

    Yes.

What didn’t you like about Zach Villa’s performance?

It wasn't bad, it wasn't good.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

There is really no plot here. Just describing science and technology. The characters are nothing more than a device to move from one bit of technology to another, so it can be described in utterly boring detail. That sort of stuff should be in the background to help the plot and characters out, not the other way around.

Sounds like there might be more books coming in the series. I won't be getting them.

Humankind has expanded out into interstellar space using star gates-technological remnants left behind by an ancient, long-vanished race. But the technology comes with a price. Among the stars, humanity encountered the Fallers, a strange alien race bent on nothing short of genocide. It's all-out war, and humanity is losing.

Would you try another book from Nancy Kress and/or Gregory Linington?

I liked it well enough to get the other two books in the trilogy.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Gregory Linington narrates like a monotone robot, in quick clipped phrases. Listening to him almost puts you to sleep. He does break up the monotony when he is doing the characters' voices, but even so, he is not very good at it.

Was Probability Moon worth the listening time?

Yes. I enjoyed the story. It took a chapter or two to get into it but I found it interesting.

The Boy Who Would Live Forever has a sense of wonder and excitement that will satisfy those who loved Gateway and will delight new listeners as well. In Gateway, long after the alien Heechee abandoned their space-station, Gateway (as humans dubbed it) allowed humans to explore new worlds. The Heechee, alarmed by the alien Kugel whose goal was to destroy all organic lifeforms, had already retreated to the galactic core, where they now lived in peace.

Would you try another book from Frederik Pohl and/or Oliver Wyman?

This novel jumps around way too much. Seems just like an anthology of heechee short stories strung together by a common thread. I found myself wanting it to be over.

I generally like Frederick Pohl, and I liked the other heechee novels, especially at the start, but this one seems disjointed and boring.

It is like a long soap opera with no action and no plot. More like a way for Pohl to preach his world views to his readers, disguised as a novel.

Did Oliver Wyman do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    Wyman's narration was excellent.

    Any additional comments?

    Yawn.

A runaway planet hurtles toward Earth. As it draws near, massive tidal waves, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions wrack our planet, devastating continents, drowning cities, and wiping out millions. In central North America, a team of scientists race to build a spacecraft powerful enough to escape the doomed Earth. Their greatest threat, they soon discover, comes not from the skies but from other humans.

Would you listen to When Worlds Collide again? Why?

I love this novel. but I have to say that Peter Ganim's narration was just horrible. He reads it in an overly dramatic style that turns a great story into a corny piece of junk.

I recommend reading the book and skipping the audio version. Same with the sequel "After worlds Collide"
