  • Jesse Livermore's Methods of Trading in Stocks

The material presented here first appeared as a continuing series of articles in the Magazine of Wall Street. They were obtained through exclusive interviews with Jesse Livermore by R.D. Wyckoff at a time when Livermore was the single most formidable factor in the market. After being "lost" for many years, these interviews are now brought together in book format.

This interview has next to no usable advice, read reminiscences of a stock operator instead.

The conclusion of the Mistborn trilogy fulfills all the promise of the first two books. Revelations abound, connections rooted in early chapters of the series click into place, and surprises, as satisfying as they are stunning, blossom like fireworks to dazzle and delight. It all leads up to a finale unmatched for originality and audacity that will leave listeners shaking their heads in wonder, as if awaking from an amazing dream.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I listened to all 3 in a row. Loved the first, really enjoyed the second, and waded through the final book.

The story in my mind was all over the place and there was a lot of repetition of unneeded explanations for the magic system (e.g. used tin allowing them to see more - 3 books in, we get it).

About midway through the book there are some twists shall we say - I feel like the book kind of jumped the shark, and those twists ended my suspension of disbelief.

Good series, could have been excellent, fell a bit short.

  • The Crown Tower: The Riyria Chronicles, Book 1

Michael J. Sullivan garnered critical raves and a massive readership for his Riyria Revelations series. The first book in his highly anticipated Riyria Chronicles series of prequels, The Crown Tower brings together warrior Hadrian Blackwater with thieving assassin Royce Melborn. The two form a less-than-friendly pairing, but the quest before them has a rare prize indeed, and if they can breach the supposedly impregnable walls of the Crown Tower, their names will be legend.

    Any additional comments?

If you liked the original series and wanted more (I'm in this boat), then this book is for you. The quality of writing and narration is excellent, just as in the originals.

One note: this book is shorter (the original series in audio were two books grouped into one audio book, resulting in a much longer read - this is a single book, about half the length).

Investing 101: Updated and Expanded removes both roadblocks, putting people on a path that they can understand and stick with. Kristof is renowned for taking the mystery and anxiety out of investing by keeping choices manageable. Kristof walks readers through the entire investment cycle and the way they think of their financial lives, rather than presenting stand-alone concepts like stocks and real estate. This expanded edition has new information about 529 college savings plans, annuities, Roth IRAs, reverse mortgages, and why declining markets can be good for you.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There are many points in this audiobook where charts are read, in audio format, for long stretches (>30 seconds) at a time. Picture hearing "4 years .06, 5 years, .04" and onward. I fast forwarded many times, but eventually gave up.

The content of the book is completely undermined by not including reference PDFs strategically. If you prefer your charts in audio format, this audiobook is for you. Otherwise, stay clear.

Catch-22 is set in the closing months of World War II, in an American bomber squadron on a small island off Italy. Its hero is a bombardier named Yossarian, who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he hasn't even met keep trying to kill him. (He has decided to live forever, even if he has to die in the attempt.)

    "Excellent Narration, Classic Story"
    Overall

The narration is one of the best I've encountered. I can see why this book is a classic. The book is incredibly(!) sarcastic, and I can see why many would not like it... if you do not have a dry/sarcastic/cynical sense of humor this is probably not for you.

Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can't always be said for the people who design them.

Charles Atkinson says: "Really Fast Paced Sci Fi!"
    "Powerful start, seem silly mid-book"
    Overall

The beginning of the book is fantastic and very compelling. As it continues it looses luster, and the whole concept of the novel seems ridiculous (super smart AI unleashed by a dead guy to rule the world). I thought this was initially a hook, and that there would be an explanation or twist... nope. 10 hours I'm going to pull the plug.

Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski led a double life beyond anything ever seen on The Sopranos, becoming one of the most notorious professional assassins in American history while hosting neighborhood barbecues in suburban New Jersey. Now, after 240 hours of face-to-face interviews with Kuklinski and his wife and daughters, author Philip Carlo tells his extraordinary story.

    "Interesting but repetitive mediocre writing"

This is a very interesting story but the author chooses to say the same thing over and over and over... sometimes I thought the book had track had started over on its own. The facts make the story compelling, not the author's writing.
