Another Bond novel that goes out of its way to remind us that Bond is a human, not someone who jumps directly to the case being solved. He misses things and occasionally gets things wrong. He regrets killing people and this internal struggle adds another piece to the puzzle of the man who is James Bond. Excellently read and an excellent story - combine to equal another great experience.
A great stand alone Doctor Who Story set with the 10th Doctor. Having David Tennant read this is incredible - it is short - but tight and well written. Worth the download!
I'll admit it - I'm an Enderverse fan. I've read almost all the books (think I'm short one) and I've watched the movie at least twice now. Although this audioplay is very close to the novel - it isn't exact (based upon my memory) but the full cast audio play makes that worth it. There is something about having each part performed by a different voice that brings a dimension to this over a normal audio book and it is a good dimension. Enderverse fans will already love it - first timers to the Ender's Game world will love it as well.
Simon Vance's performance of this book leaves nothing to be desired - each character sounds different and the story flows perfectly from him. The story itself is very well written - the post WWII England setting makes for a believable plot and the fact that Bond isn't a superhuman guy who always gets everything right on the first try makes him a believable character. Bond fans will love this one.
Being a Bond Movie fan - I am familiar with Live and Let Die, the movie. The book however comes as a surprise, set approximately 20 years earlier in a pre-Civil rights movement United States (and other locations) the differences between the movie and book are glaring and obvious. That having been said, both are good but I daresay that the book was better and more likely. Bond Fans - read on - its worth it!
Like a lot of people my first exposure to James Bond was via the movies produced over the years featuring that famous character in a variety of scenarios. Over 50 years worth of movies have been produced and they have produced their own definition of what Bond is and how he came to be. Casino Royale is the original Bond novel and bares very little resemblance to the modern Casino Royale movie or the original made for TV one of the same title. In a word - Better. Go into this book with an open mind and be prepared to forget some of the details that you think you know about Bond - and get the whole story instead.
I have all three of the Metatropolis books - and I happened to listen to all three of them in order. There is good and bad about this book - one aspect I liked from the original Metatropolis was the geographic variety - unlike the second book which was located all in one area. Like any anthology read by different people, you'll find that some voices you like and some you don't. This is the case here. The mix of authors is also unique - some from previous Metatropolis books some new. Overall, the book is very good - hence the 4 stars. I do not think it has the appeal of the first book, but it is very well written and very well read. If you have the other two, this is a natural book to buy and it is worth the price. You'll be taken to places you haven't been before in this world, and some that you'll see from a different view. Some characters are old, some are new. Its a good read, but I don't think its as good as the first book.
Historical fiction is a difficult genre - play too close to Historical fact and people will accuse you of straying from the facts. Play too loose with facts and people will accuse you of not paying attention at all. This book strikes the balance - fictional characters that are period appropriate, that happen to be in some historically significant places at the correct (or incorrect) time. It cannot be an easy balance to strike, but Mr. Jakes has done so and as a result has produced a book that is both entertaining and mostly factual. By using fictional characters, one is liberated from any one particular person and what they said or did not say and can instead set up the possibility of a pair of families that symbolize the struggle of North vs. South in the era leading up to the Civil War. This book is an excellent read and is very well read. For anyone interested in the Civil War, Historical fiction, or just plain good fiction - this book has something for you. I already bought the second one!
Earth Unaware is the first in the First Formic War series - as a result this is like a very distant prequel to Ender's Game. I can honestly say that Ender's Game and the subsequent books following it was the first Sci-Fi series that I latched onto when I was a kid. I've since heard the audio version - and I can say that these books are wonderfully performed and Orson Scott Card's writing style, by his own admission, translates extremely well when read aloud. The production decision to jump from reader to reader as the story changes point of view in each chapter is a good one- and all of these readers are excellent. This book ends in a cliff hanger and as a result I immediately downloaded the second book - see my review of that - Earth Afire - also here on Audible.
Earth Afire is the second in the First Formic War series - and like the first book, it ends on a cliff hanger, this one even sharper (and therefore more annoying!) than the first. I really really hope that there is another book in this series, because this cliff hanger is killing me. I want to know what happens! The performance is excellent - no notes from the author at the end this time, but a well read, well written book. Mr. Card has stated many times that he writes as if for the stage, or to be read out loud - as a result, the words take on a life of their own and are better when read to you. If you're a fan of futuristic military fiction, if you're a fan of Orson Scott Card, if you're a fan of Ender's Game - there is something for you in this book.
