More than anything, Tom Raines wants to be important, though his shadowy life is anything but that. For years, Tom's drifted from casino to casino with his unlucky gambler of a dad, gaming for their survival. Keeping a roof over their heads depends on a careful combination of skill, luck, con artistry, and staying invisible. Then one day, Tom stops being invisible. Someone's been watching his virtual-reality prowess, and he's offered the incredible - a place at the Pentagonal Spire, an elite military academy. There, Tom's instincts for combat will be put to the test and if he passes, he'll become a member of the Intrasolar Forces.

Wendy M. Hailey says: "YA Novel with Adult Appeal"
"Not what i expected...but no disappointment either"

While i enjoyed this book it was unexpected, most writers would have followed the formula for a youth action adventure...not here, oh there were some parallels to the formula, but not in the way you'd expect.
I would even have written it differently, but i enjoyed it as it was.
This was more cerebral, psychological, moral, than i was looking for. I was shopping for a good shoot em' up sci-fi thriller. Again, i was both disappointed to not get was i was looking for, and surprised that i liked it anyway.
    It was worth the credit.

    "Rocky start...gets better."

I'm not sure if it was the narrator or the writing that was more...childish?
I went back and forth during the book as to what made this seem likes a kids book, the childish behavior of the characters or the narrator's performance...
I wouldn't say it was a bad book or a poor performance, it wasn' just didn't make it all the way to good.
The author could have given a better backstory, instead it seemed to skip the first two chapters and start on the probably got cut in editing.

  • The Hum and the Shiver: The Tufa Novels, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Alex Bledsoe
    • Narrated By Emily Janice Card, Stefan Rudnicki
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

No one knows where the Tufa came from or how they ended up in the mountains of east Tennessee. When the first Europeans came to the Smoky Mountains, the Tufa were already there. Dark-haired and enigmatic, they live quietly in the hills and valleys of Cloud County, their origins lost to history. But there are clues in their music, hidden in the songs they have passed down for generations.

Robin in Vermont says: "Lacking something important"
    "Great characters"

Sometimes i'm not certain if it's the book or my mood...i really enjoyed this one, but it was a little too vanilla. The plot and characters were terrific, but it needed more intensity to be five stars...and that won't make sense until you listen to it. I do recommend it for it's great characters and the theory behind the book. I hope we see more of this story in a second or third book. I find that first books in series tend to be less detailed and lacking direction when compared to the middle or end of a series..

  • A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book 5

    • UNABRIDGED (49 hrs)
    • By George R. R. Martin
    • Narrated By Roy Dotrice
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

Dianne Houston says: "OH NO ROY!!!! NOT DENARIS!!!!!!!"
    "sadly needs a better narrator...."

The book may be fine....and i was very much looking forward to it....the disappointment is not in the writing of the book but in the choice of narrator....he just cannot make each character unique in a way we expect in an epic character driven 'by chapter''s a droning monologue in an almost brogue that makes it hard for me to listen to for a few hours, let alone 45....
With the great narrators out there this was a disappointment to hear...i'm tempted to ask for a refund and buy the book....

Jason says: "Exciting story, well told, with a great villain"
"A new spin on beings of imagination and battle..."

A refreshing new twist on vampires, elve's, and other mythical beings blended blended skillfully with with modern battle, mercenary companies, and secretive government agencies with loads of action, quirky characters and a decent storyline that kept me listening.....i purchase the second book in the series before this one ended.
We all look for something different in a book or series, i have a feeling this one will be popular with many!!

  • The Sacrifice: The Fey, Book 1

    • Narrated By David DeSantos

Lori Cheney says: "Bizarre but intriguing"
    "Great marketing plan Audible!!!!"

First a note to Audible; Thank you for a great way for us to get into a new series! First book free is genius.
Sadly, the characters in the book didn't have the personality to enchant, enthrall, or 'hook' me. It's important for me to connect with, or 'like' the characters, it's what keeps me going to the end. I'm struggling to the halfway point in this book, I haven't found a reason to like or get to know the cardboard characters.
It reads more like a dry history text book, so here's to hoping the second half of the book becoming engaging!
