This is probably one of the middle books. I love history and this absolutely covers it, but not the serious side of it. It was a nice break away from some of the more heavy books I have read.
I think the books by Vowel might be good because of the way she mixes in humor and the real story about history and what happened.
I really enjoyed the way the writer took the time to explain all the ways one life affected the other. How she could make you both feel frustrated with both women and sympathic at the same time. How the way the life and times they lived in affected the end result.
I loved how she compare the two women and how each one had their strengths and obvious weakness'.
Definately has to be Elizabeth I. For all her attempts to side step and save Mary Queen of Scots, there was no way out.
No Way Out!
I would listen to this book over and over. The fact is when you listen to the story and then the different responses from others, you can do nothing else but wonder what the right answer is, or IF there is a right answer.
I really appreciated the way the different narrators were used. It helped to bring you into a different mood and prepare you for a different point of view with each letter.
This book was extremely moving because to forces you to think through what it is you believe you would have done, and question it.
This is a very good history of the wives of Henry. I was a little concerned in the beginning because it seemed to focus so much on Catherine of Aragon, but it makes sense as the story continues. Catherine was such a big part of Henry's life and really set the standard on how he moved forward with his other wives, how could the author not give her more time. I really appreciate the fact that the author actually takes the time to mention where the information is coming from and, when appropriate, warns the listener if it is from a dubious source or not. Not much comes from those dubious sources, but when that information is included, so is the warning!
I really enjoyed the say Simon Prebble presented this book. He does not change tones much but is able to convey the story in a strong, proud way without judgment in his voice.
I would have loved to have been able to just sit around all day and listen to this book. However, I have 3 children and a fulltime job so THAT was not happening! However the fact is I completely enjoyed my driving time (1.5 hours round trip daily)!
