In 1948, a mysterious and charismatic man arrives in a small Virginia town carrying two suitcases - one contains his worldly possessions, the other is full of money. He soon inserts himself into the town's daily life, taking a job in the local butcher shop and befriending the owner and his wife and their son. But the passion that develops between the man and the wife of the town's wealthiest citizen sets in motion a series of events that not only upset the quiet town but threaten to destroy both him and the woman.

Would you try another book from Robert Goolrick and/or Norman Dietz?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Overly descriptive of things not relevant to the story. Very slow and boring.

The plumbing was prone to leaks, the furniture rescued from garage sales. And every square inch was being devotedly restored to its original splendor - even as a relationship fell to pieces. Now Francesca Thayer, newly separated from her lawyer boyfriend Todd, is desperate. The owner of a struggling art gallery, and suddenly the sole mortgage payer on her Greenwich Village townhouse, Francesca does the math and then the unimaginable. She puts out an advertisement for boarders. Soon her house becomes a whole new world.

What disappointed you about 44 Charles Street?

The repeating of descriptions of characters throughout the book. You don't need to hear the same thing about their personality traits over and over and over.

Has 44 Charles Street turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

What didn’t you like about Arthur Morey’s performance?

I would have preferred a female narrator.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from 44 Charles Street?

I would have cut the repeating of same descriptions of characters numerous times..

    Any additional comments?

    Would not recommend.

Grace is the story of a young runaway girl and the boy who hides her from a frightening world too large and unfathomable for him to comprehend. It is also about two brothers and the love that binds them together through difficult times.

I really liked this book. Both the story and narrator were excellent. This was the second book I have read by this author, and will definately order more.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
