This book was written in a very clever way. As I read and the story unfolded, I became quite involved in trying to figure things out. The characters are interesting and the various parts of the book give background on how each got to where they were in the story itself. As I said, clever. However, the ending was a total dud. I rarely give a book 3 stars - either I really like one or I don't.....I gave this 3 because I did like it - until the end.
The narrator does a fine job and I thought initially this would be an interesting listen. It's just too hard to follow. Maybe I haven't paid close enough attention. Still, I felt lost as I went from chapter to chapter. Just not enough substance to hold my interest.
I didn't know what to expect with this book and am so glad I decided to give it a listen. This will be one of those books that I will think back on. The characters were so beautifully described both in what they said and did. And the author didn't lay it all out in order. The book switched back and forth which added sweet mystery to the lives of the characters. This is a really good book and I do hope the author keeps up his good work. The narrator also did an excellent job.
I tried, really, to get into this book. Felt I hadn't been paying attention so rewound to beginning after an hour in. Many reviewers suggested things perk up in the middle. Maybe so but I have more to do with my time. This was just too slow and tedious.
By the time I made it to the end of this book, I realized there was a very important message. But getting to that point was, at times, torturous. I've generally made it a point in my life to avoid the types of women characterized in this book......mostly stay at home moms who are obsessed with themselves and their children and who are quick to pass judgment on any women who are not of their ilk. I nearly didn't finish the book. While the narrator did an excellent job, she was too excellent!!! She brought these complaining women to life! However, this is a very clever book and I ended up listening for the conclusion. The book redeemed itself. Not sure I'd recommend it. Again, these women, save for Jane, were just too full of themselves.
Such a wonderfully written book. I tend to listen to mysteries or high drama and was pleasantly surprised to find how much I enjoyed this story. The descriptions of both the characters and the land made the story come alive. In a time when most things are so 'in your face' the time spent listening to My Antonia was like a mini vacation. So glad for the opportunity to hear a sweet American classic. And the reader was excellent.
I love Jack Reacher!! I don't care how corny the plot may be or how predictable the outcome, I am totally entertained by the Reacher books! Dick Hill is his usual excellent self. Go for it!!
This is not a prize winning book - it's simply a good story. Flowers can do no wrong in my book so I'm probably a bit biased. There were some interesting twists and turns which made the book worth the time spent listening. Really like the ending!!
This is a good classic listen/read. Lots of good descriptions of the way westward and life during the early to mid-1800's. The characters were well developed and came to grow on me. Overall, I enjoyed the story but the ending was just that - an ending as if the author just stopped writing.
I can't say this is not a decent listen. It has good characters, a tight plot and good twists and turns. But Baldacci seems to be taking the route of James Patterson and others who just seem to pump out books. It's as if they use a central theme, change the characters and go for it. There are so many many many details in this book and they just go on an on and of course, they all come to a 'logical' perfect conclusion. Again, not saying this isn't a good story - I just feel like I knew the ending having read all of Baldacci's other books. Only 3 stars and truly, I think I'll give the next Baldacci a pass.
Not a terrible story, just very childish and predictable. More of a story for an older teen than for someone who enjoys a more complicated, intriguing read.
