British couple Andrew and Sarah O'Rourke, vacationing on a Nigerian beach in a last-ditch effort to save their faltering marriage, come across Little Bee and her sister, Nigerian refugees fleeing from machete-wielding soldiers intent on clearing the beach. The horrific confrontation that follows changes the lives of everyone involved in unimaginable ways.

There was a cloud over the entire book. It was depressing in most aspects and seemed to go from one tragedy to the next. The narration was excellent and the story had relevance - especially with the recent news but still, a downer.

The Bartender' s Tale stars Tom Harry and his 12-year-old son, Rusty, who live alone and run a bar in a small Montana town in the early 1960s. Their lives are upended when Proxy, a woman from Tom's past, and her beatnik daughter, Francine, breeze into town. Is Francine, as Proxy claims, the unsuspected legacy of her and Tom’s past? Without a doubt she is an unsettling gust of the future, upending every certainty in Rusty’s life and generating a mist of passion and pretense that seems to obscure everyone’s vision but his own.

If you're looking for edge of your seat, action packed suspense, this is not the book for you. If you're looking for a beautifully told story, check out this book. The characters hold their own and each adds to the tale of a man and his son during the 50's in Montana. The ending is perfect - you get just enough information to satisfy any questions yet enough leeway to wonder. The reader does an excellent job. Wow! I loved this book!

In Sarum, Edward Rutherfurd weaves a compelling saga of five English families whose fates become intertwined over the course of centuries. While each family has its own distinct characteristics, the successive generations reflect the changing character of Britain. We become drawn not only into the fortunes of the individual family members, but also the larger destinies of each family line.

Why I listened as long as I did is my fault!! I should have thrown in the towel on the first download and saved myself a lot of aggravation. There are so many characters in this book and such a long span of time that it became nearly impossible to keep track of the details. And the details I did retain we meaningless. There little of any emotion in this book - a little misery, a little self-satisfaction but very little else. None of the characters stood out from the others. This is a long, dreary, dull book.

I'm not a weepy person yet I shed tears at the end of this sweet book. No action here, no who dun it - simply a great story with characters I will think about for time to come. The author did a great job as did the readers. Very thought provoking and well worth the credit.

Ninety miles north of Seattle on the Washington coast lies Bellingham Bay, where a rough settlement founded in the 1850s would become the town of Whatcom. Here, the Lummi and Nooksack Indian people fish and farm, hermits pay their debts in sockeye salmon, and miners track gold-bearing streams.

I remember Annie Dillard from Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek and hoped this book with give me as much joy as as that one did. I lasted till 1/2 way through the second download and couldn't bear another minute of it. There are too many characters, too many odd names, too many generations and too many stories to tackle in one book. Although the years sped by in this book, the story did not. Nothing ever seemed to be resolved and there was not much to keep my interested. I am obviously among the few who did not enjoy this book. I gave it a go and figure my time is more valuable than being able to say I finished this!

It seems at first like a simple, tragic story. Tyler Wingo, a teenage boy, learns the awful news that his father, a soldier, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Then the extraordinary happens: Tyler receives a communication from his father...after his supposed death. Tyler hires Sean and Michelle to solve the mystery surrounding his father. But their investigation quickly leads to deeper, more troubling questions. Could Tyler's father really still be alive? What was his true mission? Could Tyler be the next target? Sean and Michelle soon realize that they've stumbled on to something bigger and more treacherous than anyone could have imagined.

I tend to listen to anything by Baldacci. This one is definitely not one of his best. Very predictable and sophomoric. If you are a Baldacci fan, give this one a miss. Not worth the credit. I gave it 3 stars only because it is Baldacci and hope he does better on his next book.

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Grisham does it again!! I had no clue what to expect from this book yet the more I listened, the more I was pulled into the story. This is not a book with a lot of action and cliff hangers - no espionage, gun fights or love scenes. Rather it is the story of a court battle that is extremely well written. It left me wondering right up to the final chapter. An excellent read/listen.

How nice to be able to listen to the wonderful narration of Lisette Lecat telling the tale of another phase of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency! Always a pleasure to slow down a bit and continue the story of Precious, Grace and their families. If you've read others in this series, you certainly won't be disappointed with this one.

I've read other things by this author and was so looking forward to this one. I couldn't seem to get into it. About mid-way through the second download, I called it quits - which I rarely do. I had a difficult time following the names, the background and the story in general. Too bad....I had wanted to like it.

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had. Reacher is there to meet - in person - the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone. But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

Another Reacher hit. I can see a follow-up here with two of the characters, hope so anyway! My only complaint (shared by someone else who listened to this) was that mid-way during the second download there were several characters introduced. We kept getting them mixed up and confused mainly due to there rather difficult names. Glad I stuck with it (I almost didn't) because things wrapped up nicely.

I could probably pick this book apart but am such a Lee Child/Dick Hill/Jack Reacher fan that I have a sort of unconditional love of the series. Give this one a go.
