  • White Teeth

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Zadie Smith
    • Narrated By Jenny Sterlin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Archie's life has disintegrated. Fresh from a dead marriage, middle-aged Archie stretches out a vacuum hose, seals up his car and prepares to die. But unbeknownst to him, his darkest hour is also his luckiest day. With the opening of a butcher's shop, his life is saved and soon he is on his way to beginning a new life with a young Jamaican woman looking for the last man on earth.

    Susan says: "Superb narration"
    "Please save your time"

I thought this book would NEVER end. Why I finished it, I know not. Guess after investing so much time in it, I figured I'd hang in till the end. First of all, the narrater was excellent. Her various accents added much to the humor of the story. The writer is also way above average - many, many funny moments, great character development. Yet the story was just a waste. I kept waiting for a tidy ending - it never happened. Suffice it to say, I was relieved and glad to be finished with this.

  • A Plague of Secrets

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By John Lescroart
    • Narrated By David Colacci

The first victim is Dylan Vogler, a charming ex-convict who manages the Bay Beans West coffee shop in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. When his body is found, inspectors discover that his knapsack is filled with high-grade marijuana. It soon becomes clear that San Francisco's A-list flocked to Bay Beans West not only for their caffeine fix. But how much did Maya Townshend - the beautiful socialite niece of the city's mayor, and the absentee owner of the shop - know about what was going on inside her business?

Stephen says: "A 'Law and Order' Type Story"
    "Very ordinary"

Not good, not bad......rather blah. The reader left much to be desired and the story line was a bit disjointed. I finished it but can't give more than 2 stars.

  • The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By David Mitchell
    • Narrated By Jonathan Aris, Paula Wilcox
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In 1799, the artificial island of Dejima lies in Nagasaki Harbor as Japan’s outpost for the Dutch East Indies Company. There, Jacob de Zoet has come to make a fortune large enough to return to Holland and marry the woman he loves.

Michael Cox says: "Less about the arrival more about the ride"
    "Why a Best Seller??"

Can't figure out how this one made the NY Times Best Sellers list. I gave it about a 3.5 hour listen and decided to cut my losses. It drones on and on and I was never able to figure out where it might be going. I rarely chuck a book yet this one was too dull, the names to difficult to remember, the plot too muddy, and the accents to absurd to bother with.

  • The Ritual Bath: The First Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Faye Kellerman
    • Narrated By Mitchell Greenberg

Detective Peter Decker of the LAPD is stunned when he gets the report. Someone has shattered the sanctuary of a remote yeshiva community in the California hills with an unimaginable crime. One of the women was brutally raped as she returned from the mikvah, the bathhouse where the cleansing ritual is performed.

    Eva Gannon says: "Good Read"
    "Very predictable"

Just not all that.....could have been reduced to about a 3 hour listen.

  • The Cruelest Month: A Three Pines Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Louise Penny
    • Narrated By Ralph Cosham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It's spring in the tiny, forgotten village; buds are on the trees, and the first flowers are struggling through the newly thawed earth. But not everything is meant to return to life. When some villagers decide to celebrate Easter with a séance at the Old Hadley House, they are hoping to rid the town of its evil - until one of their party dies of fright.

Charles Atkinson says: "Gamache Under Attack"
    "Enough is Enough!!"

This is the first Audible listen in years that I've ditched after hours of listening. Reviews of this book all indicated it was a good choice but for me, it was torture! There were just too many unclear subplots. It was hard to figure out who was who with all the French names and nicknames. After about 6 hours I decided I didn't care how the woman died or who killed her. I just wanted to be over it. I guess if you're a fan of this author or had read previous Gamache books, you may have insight I didn't have. As noted in the beginning of this review - enough is enough of this one!

  • Shantaram

    • UNABRIDGED (43 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Gregory David Roberts
    • Narrated By Humphrey Bower

This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

Jamie says: "Do Not Miss This"
"This will make an excellent movie!!"

This was an excellent listen. The narrator made the characters come to life. The descriptions and story line were top notch. As long as it is, I wished it could have gone on even longer.

  • Tea Time for the Traditionally Built: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Alexander McCall Smith
    • Narrated By Lisette Lecat
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When she asks her dependable husband, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, to fix her tiny white van, Precious Ramotswe fears he might just sell the vehicle and buy her something more modern. And so he does. But this will not do. So Precious tries to track her beloved van down - and learns it has already been stolen from its new owner.

    Carl says: "Fun Like Always"
    "Not as good as others"

A nice, easy story - just not as interesting as previous listens. The main characters are all present and the reader is excellent. Worth the download; still, not as good as previous #1 Women's Detective Agency books.

  • The Associate: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By John Grisham
    • Narrated By Erik Singer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Kyle McAvoy grew up in his father's small-town law office in York, Pennsylvania. He excelled in college, was elected editor-in-chief of The Yale Law Journal, and his future has limitless potential. But Kyle has a secret, a dark one, an episode from college that he has tried to forget. The secret, though, falls into the hands of the wrong people, and Kyle is forced to take a job he doesn't want, even if it's a job most law students can only dream about....

JoAnn says: "Good, but not nearly as good as The Firm""
    "Grisham on the decline"

So many talented authors write one excellent book after the other, they peak, and are replaced by yet another talented author. This may be the the falling action phase for Grisham. I've long been a fan of his and was so disappointed with this one. As other reviews have pointed out, the ending was flat. It was as if Grisham became bored with the entire plot and just wanted to end it so he could go the Islands for a break. If your a new Grisham reader, this may appeal to you. Do, however, read his earlier work. Only 2 stars (and one is because I have so enjoyed Grisham in the past).

  • Catch as Cat Can

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Rita Mae Brown
    • Narrated By Kate Forbes
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Never have two species co-created a work of such suspense and humorous catitude as the wildly popular mystery series by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown. This time out, that agile-witted tiger puss Mrs. Murphy makes the round of parties where Virginia's Very Best People mingle with some of the worst. Together, she and her human must unravel a veritable cat's cradle of ambition, greed, and murder at the center of which waits a killer with the most tangled of motives.

Claire says: "Sneaky Pie Brown & Her Insights"
    "Strictly for cat lovers"

If you truly are a cat lover and want to sit through endless dialogue between 2 cats and a dog, this is the book for you. Everyone else may want to pass. I've read many other books by this author and have enjoyed them. I doubt her co-author cat will win her any awards on this one. Really quite stupid.

  • The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Junot Diaz
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis, Staci Snell
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. Oscar dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fuku: the curse that has haunted Oscar's family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still waiting for his first kiss, is just its most recent victim.

    Robert says: "Wondrous Book!!!"

In the entire time I've been an Audible listener (7 years), I've only ditched one other book. This is worse than that one was. It's so pointless I won't bother to say any more than DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME.
