Hugh De Luc, a poor innkeeper, returns home from the First Crusade wearied from battle and disillusioned by carnage. After journeying from the Holy Land back to his own small village, he finds his nightmare is just beginning.

    "Grand adventure story"
    Overall

The plot may be a little bit formulaic but the story is grand adventure all the same, and I enjoyed it. I'm a little surprised by the negative reviews - it is a book about medieval times for grownups, after all. The "bawdy" jokes and sex references are quite mild, so if you find this book offensive for that then I'd have to say you most definitely qualify as a prude. If anything, it was the violence and wanton cruelty of war practices and criminal injustice during those ages that made me wince.

  • Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 50 mins)

    • Narrated By Christopher Cazenove
    Overall
    (293)
    Performance
    (55)
    Story

Warning: This isn't the real thing...it's funnier! "Gerber's affectionate, giggle-inducing send-up is one giant step toward restoring the somewhat debased art form known as 'parody,'" says Sean Kelly, former editor of National Lampoon. If you love Harry Potter - or if you have had enough of him! - you've gotta hear this.

Eddie Beard says: "If Zero stars were an option . . ."
    "Cheap and tawdry"
    Overall

This is a tired, overblown attempt at a parody that fails because it bears little resemblance to the original tale. The parody Harry is a low-life who hustles, smokes, and has no life, much less interesting adventures. A real parody captures the essence of the original and tweaks it, usually just enough to make it humorous. If you like fart jokes, this book is in your style.

  • 3000 Degrees: The True Story of a Deadly Fire and the Men Who Fought It

On December 3, 1999, the call crackled in to the men of the Worchester, Massachusetts Fire Department: a three-alarm warehouse blaze in a six-story windowless colossus of brick and mortar. What happened next - and how their lives and community were changed forever - offers an unprecedented look at these heroic men whose job it is to rush into burning buildings when everyone else just wants out.

Raymond A. says: "Take an adventure into an inferno"
    "not so interesting"
    Overall

For a book about a dramatic fire that cost some brave firefighters their lives, you'd think this would be more interesting. I found my mind wandering as I listened.

Margaret Cho has a way of disarming her audience, dismantling preconceptions, and delivering punchlines that sting with wit and veracity. She derives much of her material from her upbringing as a second generation Korean American in San Francisco.

I laughed so hard over the "Gwen" story I nearly wrecked my car on the freeway. Don't listen to this one unless you can drive responsibly while completely losing it.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Christopher Allen walker says: "Great Pulitzer Winning novel!"
"Biology, destiny and the riddle of the heart"
    Overall

This is the fascinating story of a person who sees the world from the viewpoint of both genders without actually knowing why. The parallel story is the tale of a pair of young, naive Greek immigrant ancestors (told with loving grace by the narrator), and the fascinating juxtaposition of pioneer spirits. Download it in high quality format, as the voice volume modulation is not too good.
