If I had picked up this book without looking at the author's name I would never have guessed that Scott Card was the author. Card is one of my favorite authors and I've read many of his books, both fiction and nonfiction. But I was disappointed with this read. The plot depended too much on coincidence to explain the action. And while Card is a master of character development I felt that the characters in Empire were paper thin lacking depth and personality. I simply never got to know these folks.
There were surprises throughout the story which is a good thing in a novel but I felt the explanations for some of these events lacked any believable logic.
While I found the book's basic concept intriguing I just wish Card could have used his magic to bring the story to life as he has so many times before.
Great adventure! Great narration! Couldn't ask for anything more! My kids love these books! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Very nice idea! Well written and well narrated. Great plot, great characters with a lot of surprises. Bottom line it was a lot of fun. I hope there will be more in this series.
Well written, classic Card and Stephen Rudnicki does his usual masterful job narrating the story. The only downside is that the story builds to a critical point and then stops. Now I'm left holding my breath waiting for the next in the series. I can understand ending with a cliff hanger, but as a listener its a little frustrating when the next book isn't available yet.
The story was pretty good but I felt the language and sexual violence ruined what would have been a good book. I know there are many books out there with stronger language etc. but from the reviews and description on Audible I had not expected this level. And for for me these things were distracting enough that I probably won't continue the series.
A book of practical suggestions for how to approach people with the gospel in a tactful meaningful way. The tactics are mainly "common sense" but the kind of "common sense" that is difficult to manufacture on the spur of the moment when you are confronted with an unexpected opportunity to share your faith. I found the book helpful and I would highly recommend it.
Let me start by saying I enjoyed this book. If you've read any of Grisham's adult novels then you are aware how good he is at developing characters and this book was well done in that regard.
The book also held my interest til the end. It was a fun ride. Fun that is until the end. And that's where this book disappoints. There were several threads that ran through the story that were never resolved. These were not incidents that were mentioned in passing by some obscure character, but one thread in particular kept popping up over and over again. Part of the reason I was enthralled with the story was because I wanted to know what would happen to one particular character and how that situation would be resolved. When I finished the book and was left hanging, I felt cheated.
This series has a lot of potential and I hope Grisham will write more. I just hope that in some future book he will let us know the resolution to some of these dangling little threads.
Fun for the whole family! My preteen children and my teenagers alike loved both Michael Vey books. And yes, even though its a kid's story I have to admit I enjoyed it too. The characters are well developed and the plot is intense with a lot of action. I should mention that the narrator did an excellent job, and was easy to listen to.
My kids keep asking if the next book in the series has been published. We hope it will be soon!
Very nicely done! Still retained a little of the flavor of the old Tom Corbet radio show but it has been up dated with modern vocabulary and sound effects. IMHO the plot and characters were as complex and well done as most of the original Star Trek episodes. I hope the Colonial Radio Players will make more of these. If you are a sci fi fan give it a try, you'll probably be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
Well developed characters and great plot. Nicely done. The book is obviously the first of a series so it ends with some major conflicts unresolved. A little disappointing that the next book isn't available yet on Audible, but I hope it will be soon.
A page turner for sure and worth a credit. I would also like to put a plug in here to the author or publisher if they should happen to read this review. Would you please consider putting the Cooper Kids Adventure Series into an audio format? I think it would be a big winner, at least I know that we would buy it. Thanks
