In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

What did you like best about Divergent? What did you like least?

The end of the novel is the best part - the conflict among the factions is a bigger, more interesting overarching story. I like the exposition the least. It was too clear where the story was heading to justify so much buildup.

Would you be willing to try another book from Veronica Roth? Why or why not?

    Yes.

What three words best describe Emma Galvin’s performance?

    Very Age Appropriate.

Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

What did you like best about Among Others? What did you like least?

I liked the conflict the narrator feels with her coming adulthood best. I liked the neat and tidy ending least.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jo Walton? Why or why not?

Yes. I do think she is a fair writer with a talent for writing novels literature fans can latch onto.

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved the Welsh accent. She makes the narrator come alive and injects personality and character. She made the people in the book real.

Was Among Others worth the listening time?

    Yes.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

One of those books that is supposed to be humorous but somehow fall short. The jokes are a little tired, the patina of the character's personalities feels worn as though you've read a more clever version of the same story elsewhere.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The performance is stellar. If not for Jarvis's storytelling abilities, I would have stopped listening.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Nothing. This book was just poorly written. No performer could carry that kind of crummy material.

Has A Stir of Echoes turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

How could the performance have been better?

    It was fine.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Stir of Echoes?

I found most of the dialoge goofy.

Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf. Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother - and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn....

What disappointed you about The Snowman?

This mystery/ thriller was neither captivating nor scary. I didn't care about the victims or the identity of the killer no matter how hard I tried.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Probably The Marriage Plot.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Robin Sachs?

    Sure.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very little. That was the problem.

    Any additional comments?

Any listener will guess the killer early on. There are much better thrillers out there right now. The Informationist was a good read.

Would you listen to Blood Red Road again? Why?

Yes. I really enjoyed the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Saba - obviously. This is kind of a one girl show.

What aspect of Heather Lind’s performance would you have changed?

I just found her voice and some of her enunciations too juvenile. It took me a while to get used to her voice, which is not necessarily pleasing to listen to.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Miss The Hunger Games? Get ready for Saba.

A modern gothic novel of love, secrets, and murder - set against thelush backdrop of Provence. When Eve falls for the secretive, charming Dom in Switzerland, their whirlwind relationship leads them to Les GenÉvriers, an abandoned house set among the fragrant lavender fields of the South of France. Each enchanting day delivers happy discoveries: hidden chambers, secret vaults, a beautiful wrought-iron lantern. Deeply in love and surrounded by music, books, and the heady summer scents of the French countryside, Eve has never felt more alive.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I don't think the book jacket should compare this novel to Du Maurier's writing. Readers are simply reminded that they should stick with Rebecca.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

This book did not shock or interest me very much. Pretty predictable.

What three words best describe Kristine Ryan’s performance?

    very solid interpretation.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes and I'd expect something pretty and middle-of-the-road like Water for Elephants.

We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Would you try another book from Martha Stout and/or Shelly Frasier?

I like Frasier fine. Stout lost my listenership with her lack of scientific foundation.

Would you ever listen to anything by Martha Stout again?

    Nope.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Shelly Frasier?

    Yes.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Sociopath Next Door?

Someone should have insisted on a heavier scientific bent. This book comes of as pop psych in a bad way.

Would you listen to The Night Circus again? Why?

Absolutely, The atmosphere of this book is enchanting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Night Circus?

Every moment where performances or tents in the circus is described is memorable. I changed favorite tents a dozen times.

Have you listened to any of Jim Dale’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I thought he was excellent.

Who was the most memorable character of The Night Circus and why?

I think an argument can be made for the setting - the circus - as a character. The circus is clearly the most outstanding feature in this novel. Celia would be my runner-up. The novel opens with her and the reader develops a certain affinity to her struggle with the challenge.

    Any additional comments?

One of my top five from Audible so far.
