I don't usually like stories that involve time travel. This one seems like a reaction to all of my objections–it addresses most of the inconsistencies of time travel in a clever plot. It is internally consistent, while most time travel stories are not. In its time, it is genius, but now it felt dated. If you can place yourself in a time when computers were expected to be able to think, or if you love Asimov, this book is for you. While it is a classic of science fiction, I didn't think it measured up to Heinlein. If I could go back in time, I would recommend it to myself, but in my top 100, not in my top 10.
Witty and amusing, as always from Terry Pratchett. These audio books make my commute seem too short.
I've listened to over a hundred books on Audible, but none have been as entertaining as the the Odd Thomas series. I usually prefer hard science fiction, books of literary importance, or believable historical fiction. My "willing suspension of disbelief" is limited. The wit and depth of character in this series overrides my usual distain of the impossible. The narrator is perfect for the part. If I were reading this, I couldn't come up with a more perfect "voice."
I generally prefer SciFi over fantasy. This leans toward the fantasy side, but it held my interest. The narration was excellent. This book stops rather than ends, so be prepared to get the next book if you like this one.
If you like Sci-Fi mixed with politics, this is a great listen. It reminded me in many ways of _Dune_, which framed political intrigue and social commentary within a sci-fi story line. Having some historical perspective on this piece makes it even more interesting. This was originally published in 1966, before the first moon landing--before I was born. The exploration of politics so left as to be right is as interesting as the subtle and comic development of an artificial intelligence from child-like naivete to nearly omniscient wisdom. The narration is very good, especially considering the abrupt changes in accent necessary to separate the characters. Highly recommended.
