A deadly serious game of hide-and-seek is on. The CIA's brilliant young analyst, Jack Ryan, thinks he knows the reason for the sudden Red Fleet operation: the Soviets' most valuable ship, the Red October, is attempting to defect to the United States.

What did you love best about The Hunt for Red October?

Love submarine thrillers and especially Clancy's early novels.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Plot moves along well, keeps you wanting to listen.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of J. Charles?

Anyone. I had no clue everyone in our military and intelligence services is from the deep south..... or that everyone in Russia has the exact same voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Not really.

    Any additional comments?

Narration is terrible. The speed almost seems sped up and the narrator is awful. Every single American sounds like they are from the deep south, all Russians are the same, Brits aren't too bad. Seriously, if you can't do accents, just NARRATE!

  • With Hitler to the End: The Memoirs of Hitler's Valet

Heinz Linge worked with Adolf Hitler for a 10 year period from 1935 until the Fuhrer's death in the Berlin bunker in May 1945. He was one of the last to leave the bunker and was responsible for guarding the door while Hitler killed himself. During his years of service, Linge was responsible for all aspects of Hitler's household and was constantly by his side. He claims that only Eva Braun stood closer to Hitler over these years. Through a host of anecdotes and observations, Linge recounts the daily routine in Hitler's household; his eating habits, his foibles, his preferences, his sense of humour, and his private life with Eva Braun.

Douglas says: "Books Like This Are Important..."
    "Interesting, if skewed perspective."

The only audiobook memoir I've found from a member of Hitler's inter-circle. As Hitler's valet he was obviously one of the closet to him, however much seems to have been purposefully omitted. Although unstated it is clear that Linge still thinks highly of his former "chief". If you haven't read other memoirs from those close to the former dictator this book could come off rather objectionable. Despite its flaws it's still an interesting listen. Recommend only to those interested and experienced in this era of history. Narrator does a good job.

An accident at a German nuclear plant, an illegal arms deal, and a biological warfare attack on the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., combine to ignite an international crisis that threatens to draw Western Europe, the Middle East, and the United States into all-out war.

Came across this one while searching for something similar to Clancy's early stuff like Red Storm Rising. Have gone on to read the following 2 novels by Jeff Edwards and wouldn't hesitate to purchase an audible version of either. Not many novels from a naval surface unit perspective. Narrator does a great job. The story moves along quickly and keeps you interested. Did find the "single combat" element a bit far fetched but was able to overlook it thanks to the entertainment value of the story. Highly recommend!!!

  • One Second After

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

What did you love best about One Second After?

Plausible situation that makes you think but keeps you engrossed in the story at the same time.

What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Makes each character more personable and easier to imagine in your mind. Have also read the book and prefer my mental picture of the characters as described by Barrett.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely
