Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

    "This author can write."
    Overall

This author can write. I very much enjoyed the Kite Runner but wondered if the success was freshman luck. Not the case. this is very much a similar tale but told from a female persperctive. Terrific!. Now I can't wait to see if he can write something this well not involving the Afghan war. I hope so....

In this best-selling novel, Patrick D. Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need.

About three things I was certain. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him, and I didn't know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

    Overall

This is basically a dime store teenage romance novel written in s slightly better than average style. Why did it cost 2 audio credits to purchase?--because the editors know you are not likely to want to read the rest of the series. Pure drek.

  • The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town

John Grisham's first work of nonfiction, an exploration of small town justice gone terribly awry, is his most extraordinary legal thriller yet.

Mark says: "Good Book - Not Typical Grisham"
    "BORING, REPETITIVE,PEDANTIC."
    Overall

I am a Grisham fan but this work is agonizingly dry and boring. The story is a compelling one but would have been better served with a 2-3 hour novella, not the 12 hour treatise that Grisham has given us.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

    Kindle Customer says: "Great Narration!!"
    "well told story, great naration"
    Overall

One of the better listens of late. Story is told first person from 2 time perspectives with great naration, particularly from the elder "jacob".

The story had potential but never developed anything new or interesting after the 1st 1/4 of the book. Steven King should be embarassed to have endorsed this farse.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

    Joseph says: "A storyteller's story"
"One of the best read in a long time"
    Overall

I listened to this audiobook primarily on the recommendations that I read on audible.com.
Most of the reviews were right on the money. This is a very well told story and is enhanced by the the accent of the narrator/author. Do your self a favor and READ IT. My goal for the day is to convince my teenage daughter to give it a chance. Once you get beyond the first couple of chapters you can't put it down.
