Loved this book, the characters are still dancing around in my mind. Read "Scarlet Feather" first if you can because some of the characters pop up again in this book a little older and wiser

In this story of perseverance in the face of adversity, Regina Calcaterra recounts her childhood in foster care and on the streets and how she and her savvy crew of homeless siblings managed to survive years of homelessness, abandonment, and abuse. Regina Calcaterra's emotionally powerful memoir reveals how she endured a series of foster homes and intermittent homelessness in the shadow of the Hamptons, and how she rose above her past while fighting to keep her brother and three sisters together.

The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

What did you like best about The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry? What did you like least?

The part when it ended. I had to force myself to finish this book

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I guess the whole consept of the story intrigued me when I read the summary, but it did not work and maybe it was just the narrator that spoiled it for me.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He just droned on. I cannot explain how irritating he was.

Did The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry inspire you to do anything?

It inspired me to write this review so others would not waste their money.

    Any additional comments?

Maybe this book works on the written page and not with this particular narrator

Would you consider the audio edition of Plum Island to be better than the print version?

I'm not sure because I didn't read the print version, but I did enjoy the audio edition.

What did you like best about this story?

It kept moving and the characters were easily developed. I also grew up on eastern Long Island so it was fun to picture all the places mentioned

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Emma was one of my favorites. She was a strong and interesting character with a good sense of humor.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Greed feeds a murderers appetite on the North Fork.

    Any additional comments?

Was certainly worth the credit used.

John Waters is putting his life on the line. Armed with wit, a pencil-thin mustache, and a cardboard sign that reads "I’m Not Psycho", he hitchhikes across America from Baltimore to San Francisco, braving lonely roads and treacherous drivers. But who should we be more worried about, the delicate film director with genteel manners or the unsuspecting travelers transporting the Pope of Trash?

What did you like best about Carsick? What did you like least?

Can't really think of anything I liked, and the nonsensical stories were what I liked least

What was most disappointing about John Waters’s story?

I had seen him interviewed about the book and his hitch hiking across the US. He gave me the impression that this was a real trip and true stories about the journey. I laughed out loud during the interview, but not while reading the book. The stories about his rides were so unreal and impossible that you immediately know it is all made up. The characters are so outrageous they are impossible to believe.

Did John Waters do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    No, they are all absurd

Did Carsick inspire you to do anything?

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

What about Edoardo Ballerini’s performance did you like?

He was smooth and did all the accents and voices very well.

    Any additional comments?

I like to flip flop between heavy and light in my reading material. This would be on the lighter side and included some real life figures mixed into the fiction. It takes place both in Italy and the US and takes us back and forth between the 60's and present day. The narrator was very good and the story at times takes you by surprise. I enjoyed it and found myself waiting for opportunities to get back to the book (Always a good thing for me!)
